I think he did the right thing. The sad thing is this is one of the most popular set of books in elementary school libraries today. It is like that new movie where the mouse gets flushed down the drain and on the commercial it looks like little wades of poop singing. What is this teaching our young ones?

Maybe it's just my young-ness, but I don't see the big deal, to be honest. They weren't naked - there are much much worse things that people where to schools these days that show a lot more. It's not like they just came to school like that either; they came on a day that was set aside to dress like superheros. Yes, I realize they were portraying a super hero who only wears his underwear and a cape...but they did it in (what I feel was) a good way. I think he overreacted myself.

And what are these things teaching our kids? That it's okay to be silly, make believe, and that feces isn't a taboo subject - but rather a fact of life. The point of being a kid is to do just that - be silly and make believe.

Of course, these are just my opinions...

I don't really see the big deal about it either. I don't think it teaches out kids anything that goes against fundamental values like honesty, kindness etc... I can certainly think of worse ways kids are dressing that bothers me more. The sexualization of kids through their dress bothers me a lot.... when I see little children in bikinis, preteen and teens in clothes that literally look like they're working the streets - THAT bothers me and I wonder what those kids are learning from it... the underwear? meh. jmo

Wish they had these books when my kids were little... oh the laughter. Guess what immature mother tought her kids to talk burp talk? Only at appropriate times, of course.

I can think of far worse things to be dressed as. As far as the books go, I think they're gross, but I am thrilled to see kids who wouldn't normally be reading anything, enjoying them.

I think the principal was making way too big a deal of this. This is a popular set of books with young readers. Let's face it, kids love body functions. It's getting them to read and that is what really counts. The girls were covered and participating with school spirit. The costumes that should be looked at are the ones that look like Freddy and all the slasher movie costumes.

What about when their thong is sticking out of their pants on a regular day does he send them home then? I hope so.

A Captain Underpants costume on Superhero Day is very creative. I think the principal definitely overreacted. C'mon, if you're going to have a Superhero Day at the high school level, you invite silly. Lighten up!

Drugs, gangs, violence and suicide don't belong in our schools, and they are far more harmful to our kids. Pick a more meaningful battle.

I know nothing of Captain Underpants, and I do agree, the principle was in the right to decree it out of bounds. But ya gotta admire the girls' creativeness and confidence in themselves. That was a daring costume to wear, and especially in high school, when you're judged by every little minute detail of your enire physical, mental, emotional, and social being.

Most of the high school girls I see around here have alot more hanging out than wearing underpants! I don't see the big deal either. How about no low cut shirts!!!!

I love Captain Underpants!! The principal needs to calm down. I think adults all too often forget what it is like to be young!! Kudos to these girls for their creativity.

Awww, I think the principal overreacted on this one! I have read some of the Captain Underpants books when dd was younger. Very creative costume. I thought this post was about the "exposed thong underwear/low-rise jeans" fashion. Send them home for that one, not the costume.

I think the priciple over reacted too. Now, I have to say that I have never read captain underpants...could never talk DD into reading them....LOL I was curious though, I always thought the title of the books had to be something funny was inside. I figured a long the lines of Junie B. Jones...LOL Those books were so funny when I read them to my DD that I often had to stop reading for laughing so hard....
I agree, there are much worse things going on in high school than what these girls did.
