Interesting....From a frugality standpoint, it's very practical, but I can see why their kids have a hard time with it. I don't think I'd be able to do it myself, mostly because anything I build would fall apart in about three minutes!

Well now, I guess that is frugal. Don't coffins these days have to have some sort of... ahem... waterproof seal or something? (Sorry, I hang around on Find A Grave too much, and there's a lot of coffin discussions over there!)
There was an episode of King of The Hill one time where Hank made coffins for him and Peg... LOL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Don%27t_Want_to_Wait

i told my father i wanted him to make mine. about 99% of the wood furniture in my house was made by him, why not my casket? as for the waterproof seal, i didn't think it was mandatory. just an added feature for added $.

well my hubby is a great carpenter, but if he ever made me my coffin, id be wondering??lol
I guess that would be only if I knew I was dyeing and we needed to save money for the funeral.

I was thinking about this very thing not long ago. I myself want to be creamated very shortly after my death -- cheaper, easier, etc. -- but if I were to be buried, a homemade casket built by either myself or someone I love, would seem much more intimate and loving than "weird". As morbid as it sounds, I've thought about what I would like my obituary to say, and what songs and such I would like to have at my funeral. I'm a bit morbid in the first place (there's a wee bit of Goth still left over in me from my teenage years) but the thought that I could spend 20 minutes and save my family and friends a heck of a lot of heartache and time would mean a lot to me.

I can see the frugality, but to me it's morbid. I would be very upset if any of my loved ones did this.
