This Is Freakin' Scary...
The population of my city is less than 375,000. In such a small city, news travels pretty quickly. On the way home today, here's what the top 5 headline stories were on the radio:
Teen girls held in beating of elderly woman
Bail hearing date set for N.S. youth accused of severely beating young woman
Police arrest youths in school bomb threats
There was another story, but I can't find it, involving a party and two parents of two teenage girls who encouraged their daughters to beat another teenage girl, and threatened anyone who got in the way. At one point, "Daddy Dearest" turned the poor victim over and encouraged his daughter to kick her in the stomach.
The scary thing? These aren't a bunch of renegade young guys, either -- the majority of these attacks are made by young girls, teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18. That's terrifying.
I don't feel safe at all anymore without
-- I never go any farther than my parking lot after dark without him anymore. How terrible is that, to be that afraid of your own home? I actually live in a good neighborhood, and I've noticed patrol cars scanning the neighborhood lately.
asked me to please not go out after dark if I don't have to, and he now asks me to come pick him up after work when he doesn't have a drive, because I think he himself is nervous.
Dear Goddess, get me out of this city -- I long for the peace and serenity of the rural backwoods communities of my childhood. (Though they're not even that safe anymore.)If you're interested in frugal living, minimalism and and

Montgomery al
we have big problems in most areas of our city. THere are some areas that are relatively safe. Luckily so far, the trailer park i live in is up against retail and a very nice dalriada subdivision area that is very low crime for the city. However, a nice subdivision across the 4 lane from me, that used to be a safe area is changeing rapidly. This area is behind the eastdale mall. i am not sure what they call it but more and more crimes happening there daily. I also hope someday to move to the rural areas. I am glad you have someone to help make you feel safe.

I live in a much, much smaller town, and stories like that happen here, too. Teen girls are getting more and more aggressive. I've seen alot of great books out there explaining the phenomonon.
The scariest thing is when the parents encourage it. In that one story where the parents participated, I hope there are some big consequences for them. Jail time would definately be in order plus damages to the victims (both the target and onlookers) and their families. It is just plain disgusting.
On a lighter note, one of the recent news stories in my neck of the woods was a drunken man staggered out in front of a local police car on the highway! Neither were seriously injured, since the cop swirved, and it was determined that the drunkard was at fault. Now that must have been one heck of a hang over!!Last edited by inneedofhope; 10-09-2007 at 07:34 PM.

I noticed, when I moved to a small rural community, that the frequency of femal fights/violence is much higher than the cities I've lived in. I'm not sure why - have wondered whether it is some sort of odd "local custom" - but it is not even just girls. Their Mom's will actually schedule appointments with each other to go have a fight in a public place where the kids can watch - and the vocabulary is atrocious! I don't usually think of myself as snobbish, but I must admit that I think of this behaviour as "low class".

those headlines are something else. I'm in Dallas and we have some pretty vicious stuff happen here from time to time but to hear all of that just on your ride home, i'd start to worry about my safety too.

We live in a fairly small town and it really has no problems, which I'm grateful for.

Today was a cruddy day here too! There are some days that I wish I were four again and lovin' life, oblivious to the unhappiness around me... We are so lucky though in so many ways and tomorrow will be better.

I'm right outside a town of 25,000 but all afternoon long they did live broadcasting about the Cleveland school shooting today, this was less than an hour from me.
But wow Edna, scheduled fighting? WOW!! That's just AWFUL!
Normally we have the usual here, a little theft, occasional drunken brawls, vandalism. When we do have big things they're really big though, and really rattle us.

Yep. Pretty unbecoming in women in their 40s - you'd think they'd know better by then!

It's obvious to me that these days people, and I don't know why, are becoming more like savages. It's almost completely unbelievable.
Parents video taping their daughters beating another. Ok, when I was growing up I would have gotten abeating for even thinking about doing something like that.
An parents scheduling arguments with other parents? It's not only low class, it's down right idiotic.
By the way, this is not meant to offend anyone, it's just that things are so different now than whne I was growing up. And if these parents grew up at the same time I did at all they would have been taught better than they are behaving. Seems they have some unresolved issues to deal with.

It all just makes me sad. I guess I am a Fred Rogers person inside and like to think there is good in all of us. I know that our world has evil in it, though. It's sad.

I can't get past that over 300,000 people is considered a "small city" lol. We are a small city and the population is more around 30,000

I miss Mr Roger's too! We need more kind people in this world who are as concern about others as they are about themselves! Of course we can't always help everyone out. Sure we all have bad days & aren't as nice as we could be. However, many see Nice as a Weakness!
Very sad to see young women acting like animals. This is in all towns, large & small. Its everyone's problem since these young people enter the system & continue to cost tax payers & communities year after year. I live in a much smaller town, but we have our share of delinquents. Not sure what the solution is, but this is senseless behavior that should have severe punishments for all involved!
