    Default fast food nation.

has anyone else read the book by eric schlosser or seen the movie? i just watched the movie a hr ago and im going to get the book again b/c i didnt have enough time to read it last time i got it from the library. i was very grossed out by the ending where the girl had to cut up the kidneys and they showed the stomach (i think thats what it was) flopping down the conveyor belt. makes me want to become a vegetarian or vegan now and i probbably will. i already know a site i can get recipes from. vegweb.com

I tried to watch, but it did not hold my interest. I did watch "Super Size Me" which illustrates the health risks of this type of diet.

I read the book a few years ago, when I was following a vegetarian diet. I thought it was very well written, in particular the history behind it all and how the fast food industry has evolved and become such a part of American life.

    Hello karone

Yes I've got the book (haven't seen the movie) and in fact posted about it on this forum 12 months or so ago.

I highly recommend it to FV members - even if you don't like reading. It has changed the way my family eats and shops so drastically that I still can't believe how stupid, how sheep-like and how gullible we were to believe supermarkets claim on how our food is grown, prepared, transported and marketed. We now grow most of our own and what we can't grow, we purchase through organic co-operatives in bulk. The section on animal cruelty in US abbatoirs and the life threatening dangers that workers face every day were particularly harrowing.

Another excellent book is "Not on the Label" by Felicity Lawrence, acclaimed british journalist, who went undercover for a year and travelled to Spain, where the majority of European salad greens are grown under unbelievably dangerous conditions (environmentally and human health wise). For example, did you know that bagged salad greens contain high levels of chlorine, a well known carcinogen?

She also rode around (undercover) with the truckies along the main motorways in the UK and learnt how Tesco and the other supermarket giants screw their producers and transporters down to the last penny, dealing in totally unethical practices such as price fixing.

Both books still in print and available in bookshops or on ebay.

I haven't read the book yet, but i have seen the movie. i too was grossed oput enough to go vegan but it didn't last long. I am more conscious of what I buy, though. If I can get it local, preferrable from a farm I will. The main part of my meal is the veg now, not the meat.
