    Default Have you ever

bought someone a book and then read it before giving it to them? The reason I am asking is I bought my brother the book Double Cross for Christmas and I am so tempted to read it before I give it to him. I feel like I am cheating or something if I do this. What do you think?

If you can still read it and keep it in it's new like condition go ahead and read it. What I would do is read a few pages and get it from the library.

I was thinking about the exact thing! I think if the book stays brand new looking, go for it.

When I give books I want to read, I just tell the person I'm giving it to that I'm interested and then they lend it to me when they are finished. You can tell that a book's been read because the outer edges of the pages will not be pressed firmly together, the spine will be creased, and if it is a paperback the cover will no longer lie flat.

I would check it out from the library. It would be really hard not to crease the book, etc. while reading it.

I agree, go see if you can find it at the library OR after you give the book, ask if you could borrow it when they have finished reading it.

My question to you is.....Is your brother the type that would even care if you read it first? I would have to say my sisters, my mother and my husband would not care if I read the book before giving it to them as a gift.

Now a box of chocolates with a few missing pieces would be totally tacky. LOL

I have totally read a gift book---if I don't have enough time, then I ask if I can after they are done--just have to be super careful...

I think you guys are right. I will just wait until he reads it and then get it from him if I can not get at the library.

Usually if I give a book I would like to read I ask them to share it with me when they are done. Sometimes I get it from the library in the mean time, but I usually put it on my booklist and then ask them about it a month or so later
