Did Anyone Watch Dateline last night?
It was about the horrible wreck from about 2 years ago from a college van hit by a semi that killed 5 people (4 survived) and one of the girls put in the hospital ended up being a case of mistaken identity. The one family that was told their daughter had died had the funeral, the grieving, etc. and the other family that thought it was their daughter in the hospital stayed by her side for 5 weeks until they figured it out. I understand that in the beginning the girls looked very similar and with all the swelling, tubes, wrapped head, etc. how you would not be able to tell.....but after she came out of the coma and you started seeing her without the tubes and wraps it is just beyond me that the family could not tell it was not their daughter. I was just glued to the program last night. I feel so sorry for both families involved with all that they each went through. They also interviewed the girl that survived and she seems to have regained her mental state. She had a 5 week block from when she was in the hospital and really just remembers from when her own family finally arrived.....I wonder if she would have made faster progress if her own family had been there the whole time. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else watched it and what you thought about the whole situation.

I saw it. What an amazing story! Found it so hard to believe the family of Laura couldn't tell that wasn't their daughter! But, even harder to believe is that the coroner didn't truly identify the body of the girl who died and was buried!!! Don't they have to confirm identity before they can release the body??? Hard to believe this happened, and could have so easily been prevented by at the very least, checking dental records! I felt so sorry for both families.

I didnt watch it but I heard about this story, with all the technology we have these days, it amazes me they couldnt figure out from the beginning who she was. Seems to me that someone just wasnt doing their job.

I had read about this and caught just the end of it on Dateline. I hope that if they rerun it, I can see the whole thing. What a heart wrenching story.

i live in fort wayne (the town where she was flown to the hospital) and my husband works for parkview hospital (the hospital that she was brought to in the samaritan) and it was a HUGE story here. we've followed it since it happend (and live only 2 blocks away from our extention of taylor university.....the college the girls attended) and are just so saddened for their families. such a heartbreaking story.
