Oprah Today - Puppy Mills
It was terrible to see how puppy mills operate. The mother dog is kept in the cage all her life. Some of the dogs has never touched the ground. These dogs are forced to bear litters of puppies without even having a rest. Some of the dogs shown looked so pitiful.
And at the near the end of the segment there was a story about how some dogs are euthanized because there is no more room in the shelter.
It was a sad story.

I heard that was going to be on Oprah today and I couldn't even try to watch it. I have such a soft spot for animals I just can't bear to see how they are treated by some of these people.
I am one of those that believe all dogs/cats should have a good home, a warm bed, plenty of food and people that love them not abuse them.

The show was an eye opener. You hear about the puppy mills but you just don't understand the depth of it until you see it. I was in tears over the show especially all the dogs being euthanized in the shelters. Just very sad! I have always gone to the Animal Rescue League to adopt my pets. Both my cat and dog are from there and they spay and neuter which is included in the cost.

I didn't watch the show, but that is inhumane. Our pets are OUR FAMILY! I can't see how someone would do that to any living being. That is sad.

I'm glad I missed the show. Our latest foster dog ..... adoption was of a puppy mill female. She was in poor shape when they found her but she is really coming to life with our family.
I can't imagine how people can think they are human when they are so inhumane.

Unfortunately, I live right in the heart of where those puppy mills are. Two of my dogs have come from puppy mills. Not by choice, but I found out after the fact. I am sure thought that the one dog would have ended up at the pound because when we bought her, she was already 12 weeks. We had been going to the pound for a few weeks at the time we got her, and could just not find one that we wanted. I also was looking online for one to rescue, but believe it or not, the process you have to go through is very lengthly and sometimes just as expensive as if you were to go and buy a new puppy. I called about a rescued dog, and was told that we could send in an application for it, but it could be up to 3 months before we would be able to actually take the dog and that is if we were chosen. At the time, my dog was grieving from the loss of our other dog, and really needed a playmate. (she has never been alone. She has always had a dog with her even from birth as she is one of 6 or 8.)
Unfortunately, because of the way that the Amish see animals, they do not think they are doing anything wrong. No matter how much you try and educate them, they will not change their beliefs. The county is trying very hard to crack down on puppy mills and animal abuse. They have come a long way in the past few years, but still have a long way to go.

I didn't realize the Amish were involved in puppy mills. I would never have thought that. They seem to be very humane as far as every other aspect of their lives? I don't want to stereotype but it just doesn't fit with the image that I have of them.

Only caught part of the show.
Just horrible. How could people do such a thing?
Eye opening." May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have."

I didnt watch the show but I DESPISE people who do such things, an animal is supposed to be your best friend, one who is there for you, not one who is to bear puppies to gain you some money. These people who do such things need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

To the Amish people, dogs are not considered family, they are considered livestock. Just like their horse or cow. They do not have that bond with their animals as we do. Now not all Amish are like this I am sure, but many of the puppy mills are run by Amish or Mennonite farmers as a way to make additional money. I know of a few that were shut down and at least one that was denied permits to start a kennel. There are many out there, and it is not uncommon to drive by a farm and see signs for different breeds of puppies. It is a shame that they are like this, and I do hope that by this report, they stop more of them.
