Default What do your kids like to read?

My brother is 13 and my sister is 9.

Neither one of them made it all the way through the first Harry Potter. They both really loved "A Child Called It" though, and even searched for the sequel at every thrift store we hit one weekend. We found it and they both got thru it in a matter of days.

What books did/does your pre-teen absolutely love?

My ds is not a reader but he enjoyed the Series of Unfortunate Events, Spiderwick Chronicles, and Narnia books.

The Harry Potter Books were so big, he just didn't want to make time to read them, but I got them on audio and the book thru the library and he "read" them within a week.

My DS (11) loves Harry Potter, he's on the last book. He also loves the Deltora series books. He loved a book called Hoot. Also your brother would probably love the Anthony Horowitz series featuring Alex Rider a teen turned spy.

Wow. A Child Called It is pretty heavy for a 9yo!

My 9yo loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, there are only two but the third is due out this summer. He also likes the Captain Underpants ones. When my girls were his age, they liked the Babysitter's Club books as well as the Sweet Valley High books.

The 13 year old had originally bought the book and read it, loved it. Then the following week the 9 year old said she had read it too! and that she thought I should read it (I did). I knew what is was about but couldnt believe that she had read through the entire thing in about two days. Then they both asked me to take them to thift stores (where he found the first book) to look for the second one.

I actually have quite a bit of the BSC books from when I was a kid. I'll try those out on her.

My 8 year old likes Eragon (and the sequel, Eldest). He also likes the Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, and the Hardy Boys -- all those mystery series.

Spiderwick, Narnia, Eragon, Ulysses Moore, Artemis Fowl series, The Waterhorse, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Percy Jackson series.

Those are books my 9 year old has read. He can't get enough!

I teach 8th grade 13-14 year olds, and they are reading all of the above, plus: Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Series. The 4th book is due to be released in Aug. and my classes (boys and girls) are counting down...literally! We have a daily counter on the board! Meyer also has a new one, due to be released in May called The Host. I'm told it's about aliens!

My 7-year old (I know...not technically who you are asking about, but technically a "pre"-teen!) loves mysteries. She's read all of the A-Z Mysteries, the Cam Jansens, Encyclopedia Browns, etc. She's started asking about Narnia and Harry Potter, etc. I think she's a little young to get going on those, but soon.

My 11 year old has a reading delay connected to an unnamed disability. Anything he's willing to read we let him. The Naruto backwards books seem to be a real hit with kids his age and younger. Another vote for Captain Underpants as well.

My 9 year old reads anything he can get his hands with a strong gravitaiting pull toward animated (like Naruto and Pokemon) stories and ANYTHING that contains anything to do with an animal such as The Call of the Wild, The Black Stallion, Misty of Chinnicquock (sp), and so on.

I volunteer as librarian at DD's school, they do read... and I mean READ!

    American Girls
    Judy Moody
The Adventures of the Bailey School Kids
    Wayside School
    Charlie Bone
    Magic Treehouse
    Artemis Fowl

Holes by Louis Sachar and the follow-up Small Steps (and just about everything by Sacher)

Roald Dahl is another good one.

DD is 14 and she loves Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, etc.. She is starting to read a series by a Christian author, Melanie Wells. She reads a couple of books a week.

We bought her the first book in the Twilight series this past Saturday night and by Sunday afternoon, she had read it and enjoyed it.

DS is 12 and I can barely get him to read his Sport's Illustrated magazines.

My 9 year old hates to read but has to for accelerated reader tests and the ones she has liked the best are:

    A to Z Mysteries
    Magic Treehouse
    Katie Kazoo series
and right now she is into The New Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley series

I have no idea why she hates to read when I LOVE to.

My DS 7 loves the Judy Moody books and the Stink books (Judy's little brother); he also adores Wayside School (by Sachar); all the Bunnicula books (Howe); Time Warp Trio; Shredderman 1 & 2; the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He liked the A-Z mysteries as well, and the Capitol mysteries by the same author.

Oh the Bunnicula books were a huge favorite a few years ago! Also a series called "Rotten School" by R. L. Stine.

    Forgot about those!
