Emily - I'm not sure if organics are important to you or not, but you can check www.wildoats.com to see if there is a location near you. They offer many items in their bulk bins (both organic and non-organic). I know they are affiliated with a store called Henry's as well, but I have been told by a friend that has one near here that they don't offer many organic choices and I'm not sure if they have bulk bins. I've seen Trader Joe's mentioned here on the forums as well - again, not sure if they have bulk bins and I'm not familiar with them as there isn't one here. Another one you might want to check into is Whole Foods Market (again, another I am not familiar with as there isn't one here).

Kim, there is either a WildOats or a Whole Foods market (I can't remember which one) about 1 1/2 hour from my little town. I buy organic free-range eggs and some organic produce from the local Kroger, but organic milk and other things are quite expensive. We do have a small health store which sells some organic food, but the turn-around is slow and so I worry about freshness, plus it's difficult to run to several stores with 2-4 small children in tow.

That being said, I want to incorporate more and more organic and home grown food into our diets. I'm getting there ever so slowly. Thanks for your suggestions! I appreciate all the help I can get.

Everyone is doing really well. I'm so proud of you all. Emily, well done with the teflon.

My recycle bin is due to be picked up on Friday and it has nothing in it.

    Default Cutting down on plastic

    Hi Rhonda,

Good point! I am doing a new thing exaclty in this area. Hopefully this helps others. Everytime I buy something, as long as it is not the weekly groceries, I bypass the bag and put it in my purse instead, or simply hold it in my hand.

When it comes to the weekly groceries, I use the same bags I used the previous week! I always ask for paper bags, because they are very resistant, and then I reuse them. This is a great way on cutting down plastic consuption! At least it is working for me.

    Take care,

    - Marta

What does this mean? I have been wondering what to do with the meat trays.

Also what do you all do about things that you can't get w/o plastic like blocks of cheese, sour cream or cottage cheese?

What do you put the bulk items in? For example here we can get spices in bulk but you put them into little plastic bags and fill the old glass containers when you get home. You can't really take the old containers because they would probably just scan it like it was a new bottle plus if you caught them in time to tell them it was from the bulk bin you would be paying for the weight of the bottle.

    Thanks,
    Kris

Lol! I know. I was reading through old posts and when I got to the last one I said to myself "I would like to know the same things as that person". Then I looked and it was me that posted it all that time ago. Hahaha!
