Bagel recipe (would go well with Brenda 67's bagel bite recipe)
These are a really good bagel recipe. When I saw Brenda67's recipe for bagel bites, I thought I might try her recipe with these!
1 pkg dry yeast
1 1/3 c. hot water
1/3 cup brown sugar
5 cups flour
Additional 10 cups water
10 TBS sugar
Mix yeast & 1 1/3 c. hot water. Add brown sugar and flour. Knead until dough is elastic. Grease cookie sheets. Pinch off golf ball sized pieces of dough. Poke hole through middle with fingers and spread out to shape into bagel shape. Boil 1 TBS sugar for every one cup of water in a large skillet (I use 10 cups with 10 TBS). Put bagel in water for 30 seconds, then move to cookie sheet. Bake for about 12-15 minutes @ 400 degrees.
If you wish you can add cornmeal to the bottoms before you put on cookie sheet. I love them that way!

Thank you for sharing this...
does anyone have a recipe for homemade soft pretzels? The recipe you posted just reminded me of them for some reason and the fact that I've been very good in the mall for the last 6 months or so.. lol.

Thanks Sarah, made these tonight, used wheat flour instead of white. They taste great, they look a little funny, but taste good.
Are they suppose to stay small, mine didn't rise at all. Not sure if I did it all right, but they are good! So guess what we are having for breakfast (:

Thanks for the recipe! I was just cleaning out the fridge today and discovered 2 containers of cream cheese we need to use up. I sent Dh out to buy bagels today (a nice cream cheese accompaniment) and they were 75 cents each! I will try this recipe out soon!

I havent tried this recipe, looks good though, will have to save it. However, just wondered hillbillyartist if maybe they didnt rise because you used too much whole wheat flower .. wonder if you used part white & part whole wheat if it may work out a bit better. Just know that from making bread .. maybe its similar?

this recipe looks good too! Was wondering if making my own bagels would be worth it to save $...I think even buying frozen bread dough and going from there would save money...We LOVE bagels here and buy alot of them.
I would leave the bagels to rise after this part
But I could be wrong...?Poke hole through middle with fingers and spread out to shape into bagel shape.
Another recipe that looks good is here
