Home made Throw Pillows.
Has anyone ever made throw pillows for the couch out of regular sized bed pillows? I happen to have several extra pillows that we don't use on the bed. Mainly we keep them for when we have company over. Lately I've been looking at throw pillows for the living room and haven't liked the prices I've seen. Today after mending a shirt I was overcome with the need to sew lol. I decided to try and see how/if I could make two pillows out of a regular pillow. I decided to use the flattest pillow we have that I never give to company.
So I took the pillow out of the case, cut open the covering and cut the pillow in half. I have pillow shams to an old comforter that I no longer have and the shams just happen to match our couch. I cut the sham in half, stuffed the pillow filling back into the cover and sewed it shut and then into the sham and sewed it shut. It's laying on the couch right now and I'm excited that it looks so good. I will post a picture later when I find the camera and after I sew the other pillow.
This website is awesome and it's because of this site that I even thought to try to make throw pillows.Chele

Looking forward to the pics. I never buy throw pillows; I enjoy making them and reuse old ones when it's time to change colors, etc.

I never would've thought of that, but than again I never learned to use a machine either! I love it that you up-cycled your bedding. That was really convenient
that the shams matched your couch, and I can't wait to see the pics either.
Very nice!

I still can't find the camera. I think the BF has it in his car and I forgot to ask last night. I guess I'll post pics tonight.
My mom taught me how to use a sewing machine and my mom and aunt taught me to hand sew. These were hand sewn though because I don't have a machine. Not the prettiest sewing job but it looks good to me.Chele

Oh, okay. For some reason it sounded like you were using a machine....that's just my caffiene not kicking in yet though
But my mom did teach to how to hand sew too. And I used to do alot of it. It seems that since we got on-line, my crafty side went down hill. I am doing what I can to change that though. I've been scoping the craft/decorating blogs, and I'm envious of what those girls are accomplishing. I remember the fun of it all too.
I've also hand-sewn pillows in the past, and depending on the fabric, I found they were pretty "forgiving" as to not being like machine sewn. And especially so if you added some trim around the edges. That silk "rope" style trim can even just be glued with the fabric glue.
Hides a million "sins".
But what's so great about your idea is that you only had the one side to sew together, right? I should look around and see what's in my linen closet. Now you've got me in a sewing mood too.
Looking forward to your pics!

I'm deffinately looking into putting some trim on the pillows. My BF was so funny last night. He looked at the one pillow I had finished and asked where I got it from. I told him I made it and he asked "made it out of what". Haha. I just laughed at him for a minute then told him. Typical guy...he was like "Oh, cool" and went back to watching TV.

Here are the pics. Still need to sew the rest of the second pillow
First pic is the couch. Second pic is a close up of the pillow and the third is a close up of the stitching.
The pics are coming out right. Here is a link to my facebook album with the pics.

Wow, you weren't lying when you said the shams matched your couch. It looks great Rhayne! But which part of the pillow would you add the trim? I was wondering, because the way the edge goes past the "bulk of the pillow itself. Kwim? I guess you know best though. And thanks for posting the pics. It was fun seeing what you did!
Nice job!

Well the way the sham was it has extra trim and it's around 3 sides. But the bottom is just sewn together. I was trying to think of how to make the pillow nicer. I dunno. I guess i'm just running ideas through my head on how the pillow "should look". lol. Thank you.

Finished the second pillow. Took less time and was easier then the first. They look identical. I'm so excited that they look so good. My BF even said they look really good.
