Default Anyone color their own hair

I want to highlight my hair. Around here it can cost as much as $70.00 at the beauty shop. I can go to Sally's and get supplies for a fraction of that amount. I am told that you first have to bleach it and then do the color you want. Anyone have any more detailed info on how it is done?

I color my hair and so does my mom and two sisters. We never bleached our hair before we colored it. We just get the color we want and do it. Our hair always turns out nice. I don't know if others bleach their hair before they color it. Never heard of that before. Others may have.

I have never heard of bleaching your hair first either and I color my hair all the time, I just buy the color I want and dye it, it comes out great too without spending a fortune.

Kay I highlight mine all the time all by myself. What I do is and it's because I have grey that I want to color. I go to Sally's and buy the color of the tint that I want 'most' of my hair to be. I mix that with the bleach and I can go and get mine and tell you what I use if you want me to. Then I put it on all over and let it color my hair darker. Then I pull my hair through the cap and use another type of tint on it for the highlights. Pm me if you want more detail, k? It works great, saves me a bundle and I get compliments on my hair all of the time.

I just buy a box of L'oreal hair dye at the grocery store. Every six weeks I touch up my roots and it has worked fine for me for years. I am usually not happy with my color after spending tons of money to have it done by an expert. Then after spending the $60-$80 you need to go back and have it retouched every 4-6weeks. AHHH!

My hair is 37" long and I do it myself. I cover up the WHITE roots(ha ha no gray here) just straight up WHITE. Even though I use salon products that my old hair dresser sends me via mail now I have never had any problems. From what she told me the only time you have to bleach your hair is if you want the entire head to be a different color. Another words lighter than your normal color.

If you want to do at home highlights, I highly recommend L'Oreal Colour Experte. It comes with a base color (no bleach needed) and a highlight "paste" that is very easy to apply. Very detailed instructions and if you have a coupon you can get it for around $15.

Right now I'm just doing my hair "straight" to cover gray, but when I used that I used to alternate it with straight hair color - the highlights still showed.

I think it depends on what you start with and what you want to end up with. Like my daughter. She has dark brown hair and wants to dye her hair pink or green, but she'd have to have her natural color stripped first in order for the other color to show up.

I just did my hair, nothing major...just used red on top of my already red hair to cover the greys. I used Garnier Nutrisse and I think it was $5 or $6.

I have a tiny bit of gray that I have successfully been covering up. It's just around my temples but I'd like to have some blond streaks in my hair. My hair is naturally a dark ash blond.

I have a box of that sitting in my bathroom that I haven't tried yet. It looked easy... glad to hear a good review!

I've colored my hair for years, never had it done in a salon. When I had DS last summer there were people who were surprised how dark my hair was in the hospital photos... LOL.... that was my natural color!

I would say if the color is similar to your own ok, but if you are superdark and are going very light, BEWARE.You may have orange highlights.

Hey, all. I am a cosmetologist. So far as I know, the haircolors that you buy OTC only have 20 volume peroxide. These will lighten your hair about 2 to 3 levels lighter than your natural color. If you had a med. to dark brown hair color and wanted a light blonde, you would need to lighten first with bleach, shampoo off and then apply your color. If you are alread a blonde, you can do the highlights with a color...no need to prelighten with the bleach. Hope this helps.

I just went to the website and they have a coupon you can print from the site. They want the usual information, but it's a $3 coupon. I think i'd like to try this highlighting product. My hair is so multi-tonal even after having it professionally done. I've done it myself. I've done it at the school. I've had it done professionally in the past. Honestly, it looks just as good after I do it myself.
