We have an abundance of wild myrtle bushes growing on our property. When the skeeters and gnats start biting, which is pretty much all the time, we simply grab a hand full of mrytle leaves and crush them in our hands and then rub them on all exposed skin. It's works great, and smells good too.

Years ago when I was doing primarily organic gardening, I kept up with the organic literature of the day (maybe early 80s?). They suggested picking bugs off your garden plants and putting them in a blender with water and spraying that on your plants. The idea was that live bugs would not hang around their deceased fellows. I didn't do this, but I did do a lot of hand picking of bugs off beans, etc. My garden is dormant this year. I'll get back to it next year and plan to do organic again.
