Default Meals for people easily Heartburned

    Hey all,

My parents are coming to visit hubby and I this weekend and I'm trying to think of things that I and feed my mom without aggravating her heartburn. She seems to be particularly sensitive right now and I want to have food around she can eat and enjoy without sending her to the ER.

    TY in advance!

I have reflux. Short-term I'm just taking omeprazole. The biggest thing is to not eat too close to bedtime. I tend to avoid Italian red sauce / make sure to eat way before bed. On the other hand, I liberally use Red Hot on almost everything and don't make an effort to eat Mexican any earlier than any other food.

Also, try to avoid high fat foods. I've also noted that for me, Indian spices (maybe because I've usually gone for lunch buffet and have way over eaten), cucumbers and for some reason the banana / peanut butter / corn tortilla tacoes I've been eating for breakfast are likely to give my "gurgily tummy" if not full blown reflux. Over-eating in general is bad for me, reflux-wise.

When I'm at risk of reflux due to unwise eating choices I use some pillows to prop my body a little upright and sleep on my right side. Stomach is on the left, so sleeping on the left squeezes it.

Long-term I need to lose some weight.

    Hope this is helpful!

Bland, non-spicy, low fat, non-greasy foods. Also no foods that are known to cause indigestion/heartburn.

If I were you, I would call her and ask her for some input on what she can eat.

Fried food and red sauces (pizza, spaghetti, etc.) are a real problem for me w/ my heartburn.

Check with her and see if she has any requests. A lot of people cite tomato sauce as a culprit, but for DH it is actually the pasta that gives him gas and acid reflux. So she could react to anything, really.

Yellow tomatoes if you are going to eat tomatoes. They have far less acid.

    Anything acidic - tomatoes/tomato based, oranges/orange juice.

Potatoes, broccoli, and cabbage is soothing for heartburn/reflux, low fat of course.

But yeah, I would call her.
