If that was the only reason, I would agree. But it seems as i other things were involved.
She DID get a whole week off beforehand, though, which is more than most pople get. I don't envy her having to say goodbye- I once had a fiance who was in the military during the first Gulf War, and it was always hard to say goodbye- I never knew if he was coming back.
Anyway, I wonder what the whole story is. She can tell her side, but the company can't really tell theirs because I am sure they are afraid of a legal backlash fom her if they do. I hope she finds more work soon.

I heard her on my local radio station today. She is a part-time worker, and works only 3 days a week. So, she had it in writing to get the three days off. Since her dh was leaving on Sunday, she told her boss she wasn't sure if she would be able to get back on Monday, but she for sure would be there on Tuesday. This was unpaid leave; all of it. The boss just said to do her best to get back on Monday. If she is a good employee, and if this is true, I think it is really crazy she was fired. Her dh is going off to war for the next 18 mths, and it seems that the company could be a little more compassionate. The interesting thing is she works on the west side of Michigan. That is the more conservative side of the state.

I think that the company has done itself a lot of harm by firing her. The bad publicity that they have received from the press over this will do them far more harm than being short one employee for one day. I know if I had the choice of using them vs using any other company I would definately go with the other company.

I agree! I guess the boss said, "Well, her husband is just going off to war, it's not like he's dead yet." Not an exact quote, but that was the jist of it. What an idiot! Even if the woman isn't the best employee, this is not the time to fire someone. I think he should move his benefits program to Iraq. I hope my school district stays far away from that company. I heard the woman on the radio and she seemed like a good person.

I an disheartened by this company's actions, yet I wonder if we have the whole story.
I agree-they have done this person a huge disservice...they only have the freedom to fire her because generations before have "just gone off to war" to fight for them.
Situations like this really tick me off!!!

And it perturbs me that probably the ONLY reason she's getting any media attention is because her husband is deployed.

I heard about this on my local radio station as well. Apparently the company is alluding to other issues but not saying what they are. Apparently the pink slip only has this issue on it though. Doesn't look good for the company stated this way.
The boss doesn't sound like he has much going on "on top" KWIM? (the only going off to war, not dead yet comment)
YankeeMom, you are right, the only reason we are hearing about this is beccause he is deploying. But that sort of caused the situation to start with, KWIM? I am sure there are people out there who are unjustly fired every day that we never hear about though.

and like someone else said, the company can't tell their side of the story like she can.
I'm sure she'll find work quickly.
