    Default Cell phones while deployed?

My son is going to Japan in July-- his phone with Cingulair will cost WAY too much to use over there. . any one know of a phone service that won't be out of reach.

(He got married last week, and would like to be able to talk to his new wife occasionally, rather than just email, if possible)

    Sunshine,

I have a BOOST cellphone thru NEXTEL you pay for your minutes up front so there is no surprises at the end of the month.....

If they will have a internet connection try the SKYPE account you can talk worldwide on your computer for pennys on the minute, (computer to computer for free and computer to land line for pennys) we call friends in Europe with this all the time......just get a headset for your computer....

    Good Luck!

No nextel service in our area, so I'm not familiar with them . .. will have to check to see what it will cost for overseas minutes.

I only can get dial up connection for my computer (same with Jake). . will the PC to PC, or PC to phone calls work with dial up?

He can wait until he actually gets there to see what is available. I know when my husband went to Germany and Iraq, there were cell phones available both places with the local phone service. He opted for just using the phone cards. With a place like Japan, they should have lots of options. Good luck. Also, yahoo messenger also offers IM with voice. So that is also an option for you.

Have him check with the base there. They should know the best companies and the cost.

I suggest he waits till he gets there and then do some research. Really all he has to do is ask around, and he'll find out whats best. hth
