    Default Goodwin17's Money Challenge

Well, I'm going to jump on this bandwagon, and start keeping account of the things I'm doing or working on to save Dh and I money. There are so many things I want to keep up with, and it will help just to have my own place to keep myself accountable. Each day (when I can) I will post what I'm doing or any results of my actions to help my financial situation.

    Friday, Oct 24, 2008

    ~No lights on until dark
~Television will be off until Dh gets home around 8pm
~Got my utility bill today, and it is lower than last month!! :go:
~No heat on yet (been keeping blankets nearby)
~Got some points on MyPoints. I'm over 10,000 points now, and when I'm at my goal weight I'm going to get a gift card to buy some high quality clothes.
    ~Only water to drink today
~Been doing some work on ChaCha to earn a few extra bucks
~Browsing through mystery shopper jobs I might do

    More to come....

Here's what has been going on today. Not quiet the frugal day I'd like for it to have been. I'll cover the end of Friday and then Saturday, October 26,2008.

Friday evening: I've now earned a total of $8 in two days of work on ChaCha. Nice to earn a bit of extra that is going to be put toward my EF. Even better is that I can earn this money sitting on my couch in my PJ's.
~I really took a good look at the electric part of my bill, and it was only $66! That is one of the lowest bills we have ever had. I can't get the garbage rates any lower, but I may see if I can cut down my water usage. I already use the "if it's yellow let it mellow" rule for the most part, so I am saving some there, and Dh sometimes remembers to help with this. I don't take really long showers, and neither does Dh. However he seems to run more water than I do. He always has the water running when he's putting in his contacts in the morning. I've never understood that. At least he isn't one to run the water while brushing his teeth. I can look online at my bill and there is a great bar graph with my utility usage. I was so pleased to see that with the exception of when we very first moved into the house, that this month we have used the least amount of electricity ever!

    Saturday:
~Took a quick shower without any lights on. The last house I lived in had no window or light anywhere near the shower. I could never see when I was shaving. It annoyed me to no end. When we bought this house last year, I was so excited that I had a light in the shower. I usually shower at night, so that's no problem. I am going to get a CFL for the light fixture soon. During the day though I have no excuse to use the light. I have a huge frosted window over the tub that is near my shower.
~Went to two thrift stores to browse around. I did end up buying some flannel PJ's in a slightly smaller size than what I wear now. Since I had my gastric bypass I've lost almost 30 lbs in about a month. Thankfully I saved quiet a bit of my old clothes, but I don't have much in the way of warm sleeping clothes for this winter. I bought 2 PJ tops and 1 PJ bottom for $6.50 at Goodwill. I thought it was a bit high, but I love flannel PJ's.
~Dh and I went to Logan's to eat lunch. Eating out has always been a big problem with Dh and I. However since my surgery my eating is at least a bit more frugal. I always get water, because I cannot drink with my meals. I always order a normal portion, and then I have plenty of leftovers. Still not a good excuse. That's got to be worked on!!!
~Dh invited his parents to come visit. I was a little irritated about it, because I wasn't in the mood. I wasn't feeling too well either so I took a nap. When I woke up I found that my in-law's had brought all the ingredients to make chili. Dh had his mom show him how to make the chili. We ate some great chili, and watched the football game. We ended up spending a little more utilities than usual since both his parents were here. We had to wash and dry the bedding for our guest room, Dh cleaned the guest bathroom, Dh and MIL cleaned up kitchen after cooking, the dishwasher was ran. The best news of the whole evening is that there is that there is plenty of chili left over for me to eat this week. Also MIL said that she brought eggs and bacon to make breakfast before they go home tomorrow. I'm so thankful for some free meals, even if we have to use a little more in utilities.
~No heat on today. Was a little cool this morning, but I bundled up.

    Well that's all for now!

Today has been a bit more of a frugal day than yesterday. So here is Sunday, Oct. 26.

    ~No lights on until dark.
~My MIL made eggs and bacon for breakfast. From ingredients she brought with her. She also cleaned the kitchen.
~Television only on from about 7-11am when my in-laws were still here, and then from 8-11pm.
~Started working on my second loom knit hat for our nephews for Christmas. These hats are being made with yarn I've had for a long time.
~A little $ was spent today. Dh who works for Lowe's got 5 boxes of hardwood flooring for our bedroom today for $45. Each box was originally $145!! We will have to order one more box to complete our bedroom. It will probably cost $100 to order a box. How often though can you get hardwood for your whole master bedroom (13x15) for the price of a single box of retail flooring. My Dh and father will install it. They got some great practice putting in some laminate flooring earlier this year in our basement. We have an older dog with a bladder problem so it's becoming a must to have no carpeting in the house!
~Ate leftover breakfast eggs and bacon for lunch.
~Ate leftover Logan's lunch from yesterday for dinner today.

Heather, is loom knitting difficult? I've considered picking up a knitting loom to knit hats for some friends and family, but I'm a bit intimidated!

Misa, I don't think it is hard at all. I've tried teaching myself to crochet and I don't think it'd be too hard, but I find loom knitting to be a bit easier. I've looked at instructions for knitting, and it seems too hard to me. I taught myself really quickly. The knifty knitters are pretty cheap too. You get a set of 4 for about $10 I think. It might be a little more. I got mine about 3 years ago when they first came out. They make others in wood that are a bit more expensive that I might invest in sometime.

~Another note for tonight. Dh and I are making our own concoction in the crockpot tonight. 5 small potatoes peeled and cut, 1 lb of baby carrots, 3/4 of a large onion, 3 large chicken breasts, 3 1/2 cups of water, and a generous amount of spices (we have some Monteray chicken spice stuff we got a while back). We'll see how it turns out. The spice smell is irresistible already. After making that and eating leftover chili, we should have some good meals for at least part of the week.

Maybe I'll get a knitting loom, then!

    Your "concoction" sounds quite tasty.
