How did you learn to knit?
I'd love to learn how to knit, but I don't know anyone who knits. How did you learn? Is it possible to learn without having someone teach you?

I think it's definitely something you could learn without someone showing you. But I also wonder if you called around to senior centers if you could find someone who might be able to show you. There must be lots of older women out there who are crack knitters and crocheters who would love to share their skills with someone.
You asked how we learned. When I wanted to learn I asked my mother, who remembered all the fancy stuff, but, oddly, couldn't remember how to cast on. She had not knitted for many years. My dad said to give it to him. He fiddled with it a bit, and to my astonishment, he remembered. He said that as a kid he had watched someone, maybe a grandmother? knitting, and wanted to see if he could do it, so she taught him. I'll bet there aren't many of us who learned at least some of it from our fathers!

I'm hoping YankeeMom sees this thread. I'm sure she has posted how she learned (and she is one awesome knitter!) and if I remember right she even suggested some websites for beginners.
