Question Weaving in ends: knitting

Okay so I'm finishing my very first knitting project. :woohoo:
We won't talk about how it's about time...I've been teaching myself to knit off an on (mostly off ) for the past couple of years. Anyway, I realized earlier this week that it's my mother's birthday on the 15th, and I didn't have a gift for her. So....I decided to her a scarf.

I finished in many hours more than it should have taken me, but at least I finished it and didn't frog the whole thing.

So I've bound off, and my question now is how to weave in my ends. I am trying to do this with a crochet needle (and no crocheting background to speak of) as I don't have a needle that would work.

I'm sure it's very easy, but I need someone to explain it to me or point me to a source that can show me. I tried knittinghelp.com but couldn't find anything.

I just try to follow the weave of the knit. Depending on how much tail I have, I try to do a couple of slipknots, as well, just to keep things in place, and I'll cut off extra once I feel like it's secure. But I don't know if there is an approved procedure for weaving in ends.

Congrats, btw, on the scarf! We all have to start somewhere, and the fact that you didn't give up means you are off to a good one!!

For me, how I weave in ends depends on what kind of finished product I'm working with and what kind of finished look I'm going for.

I found this article on Knitty.com to be a great resource: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/FEATfall04tt.html

I usually use a tapestry needle and follow the knit pattern. Sometimes I weave in as I knit by carrying the old yarn along for about half a dozen stitches.
