Knitters/crocheters, where is your favorite place to buy yarn?
I've only bought at Michaels & AC Moore so far. I know I can also shop at Joann's, but I just haven't been there since I became more interested in knitting.
So where do you like to purchase your yarn?
Any online store recommendations?
TIA

For online, I shop mainly at Knitpicks, The Loopy Ewe , and Etsy.
Brick & mortar I'm pretty limited. We don't have an actual yarn shop here. Just Michaels (which is okay), Walmart (which is very very limited nowadays), and Joanns. Joanns here SUCKS! It's like yarn is the redheaded stepchild. The entire store is packed full of fabric & scrapbooking and the yarn is shoved (literally) in back corner in two racks. It's always a mess and they never have anything in stock.
I like AC Moore, but the closest one is an hour away

I wait until it goes on sale at Michael's and get it there. I don't particularly like Walmart and their choice isn't that good in the city I shop in. Michaels has a great choice.

There's a yarn shop not too far from me. They have everything from acrylic to very expensive mohair and cashmere. And lots of cotton yarn and books and patterns.

Online:
www.knitpicks.com
www.elann.com
www.yarn.com
But one of the very best places I've found to buy yarn at a discount is by joining www.ravelry.com and watching for people destashing.
I've got wonderful yarns at a great price from there. However, you are taking a risk by buying from an individual.2012 Knitting in progress

I get mine at Hobby Lobby. But they just reduced their stock by one aisle.
But they did have Yarn Bee on sale so I bought some cool looking yarn today.

I like AC Moore and Michaels for brick and mortar stores. Online I usually buy from knitpicks or ravelry.

Don't forget Walmart. Though not one of my fave stores, if I need just a heavy worsted weight I go for the Red Heart. Also their needles and knitting accessories are cheaper there.
JoAnn's is not one of my favorite yarn buying places. I prefer Micheal's over them. I have also found novelty yarns at the dollar store.
I go to my local yarn shop if I want organic or yarn I can't find anywhere else. $$$$ They usually have a pretty good clearance section. I do not use wool so I have to search sometimes.
I have ordered from Mary Maxim online and have been pleased with them. They carry the yarn from Canada I like.Last edited by Teresa T; 01-15-2009 at 12:49 PM.

I usually buy from Michael's or online. My favorite online places are www.knitting-warehouse.com or mill ends from www.angelicrafts.com.

Knit Picks is good. I've gotten some of their cheaper yarns. I also wait until Joanns has a 50% off coupon, make a bunch of copies, and stop there each night after work to get a large skein like a pounder or cone of thread or cotton.

In my town, there are three places: Wal-mart, Hobby Lobby, and a little yarn shop called, "Knit 2 Gether."
Of the three, I like Hobby Lobby for the following reasons:
~selection
~you can look without someone trying to make small talk
~frequently 50% off.
I've never bought yarn online.Wife to Kevin: 20 years

Here's a great one for luxury yarns at bargain prices: www.colourmart.com.
They buy remainders from the cashmere sweater mills. Now, the yarn comes 'oiled' for the machines, but you can have it pre-washed for a small upcharge. Or wash it yourself.
I haven't been disappointed yet.Last edited by Early Bird; 04-04-2009 at 10:59 PM.
