If you Google "crochet bookworm pattern" you will get quite a few free patterns. The one I am using is from Crochet World, April 2005 and is all single crochet but similar.
The afghan is called, "The Mindless Knitting, TV watching, Scrap User-Upper Afghan" and can also be Googled. Hopefully this link will work: http://www.knitlist.com/99gift/scrap-afghan.htm

If its a decent amount I will use them for baby items or trim on something. Or they work well for my daughter to play with.
Otherwise I put them in a bag and then will send them to someone on my crochet board that uses scraps for projects. I personally don't do a lot of scrap work so it works well.
