Question starting baby booties...need help. **UPDATED - Finished ,** with a pic

here is the pattern I am using:

    http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting...wl-booties.htm

    what i don't understand is:

K 12, pick up 16, K12 across, [USE DOUBLEPOINT], pick up 16, K 12 [The picking up of 16 along each side used to bug me since one for every two rows (one "end stitch") wasn't enough but one for every row (knit into front and back of each "end stitch") was too many. Now I
pick up one stitch in the first "end stitch", two in the second, and alternate till I get 16 and that works well] Total = 68 stitches
can someone help me understand these directions??

here's the end result sample form that link:

Have you got the first part of the bootie done up to the point where you don't understand Melissa? If you do, could you post a pic so I can see? That way I'll know where she wants you to pick up the stitches.

here's where I am at. i have k12 slipped onto waste yarn (i slipped onto safety pins) k12 keep on needle, k12 slip onto waste yarn (safetypin). now it says to do stockinette stitch for 26 rows ion the middle 12 stitches, the ones still on the kneedle.....

my question at this point is...do i cut my yarn and begin at the middle stitches?? Or do I float the yarn to the middle stitches?? How do i get the yarn from the end of the 36 stitches to the middle 12 stitches??

Here's a pic, not to great, the scan lid squashed it a bit together, so you cannot see the holes created by the k2tog, yo, k1, repeat that it had in the pattern, but honest they are there, and look pretty good. The weight of the lid squashed it somewhat.

Yes either cut your yarn leaving a 10" tail or start a new skein and leave the other just hanging until you need it.

Here's the most recent pic. I think the bottom of the "t" will be the cuff part.

Now i have knitted to the point where the before mentioned part of the instructions confuses me.

Melissa, did you break off the yarn on the left hand side (the first short section with the safety pin) or did you leave it hanging?

by the safety pin?? I cut that, but left a 10'' tail. the ball of yarn is still attatched there by the blue needle.

Melissa I gotta tell you a sweater is much easier than these are!

I can't quite figure out what she is saying in the pattern. I'm going to work it up my self to figure it out. I'll try and let you know by tomorrow. Sorry but this pattern isn't making sense to me. I'm one of those visual people too!

Dee, don't feel bad, I couldn't figure it out either. It didn't make sense to me and I can usually figure out a knitting pattern.

Melissa, I agree a sweater will be a lot easier. I enjoy making sweaters and seeing the kids in them.

    I figured it out Melissa.

First you didn't need to cut your yarn at all. (My mistake I didn't go back and read the pattern before I told you to cut it, I'm sorry )

You worked the 12 beginning stitches then transfered them to the safety pin. Now you pick up your empty needle and work the next 12 stitches. You now have 12 sts. on the left needle (worked) and 12 sts on the right needle (not worked) Remove the 12 sts on the right needle to a safety pin. The 12 sts on the left needle still have the yarn attached to them. Work your 26 rows of stockinette stitch. (I actually did 25 rows and came out ending with a purl row as in the pattern.)

    Next step:

Take your empty needle and starting at the bottom right hand side of the long piece you just knit, insert the needle into the first stitch on the safety pin. Pick up all 12 sts this way. You are just putting them back on the needle, not working them. See the picture below.
