hair braiding, watch fob?
Hi,
My great grandmother braided her hair into a watch fob for my GGfather. My oldest brother got the watch and fob....This was a very popular thing to do in the 1800's. The Sears and Robuck catalogue advertised the braiding services, send in your hair and for a few dollars, you got a finished fob.
Anyway, I would like to do this for DH's antique watch. I can't find any information on it. It was done in the style that is used to make key chains out of that plastic lacing. Kids make them at camp in craft's class. I don't know what it's called, so don't know how to search for it. Anyone ever come across anything like this?
Thanks,
lacyj

Oh wow, Sara, your link brought back lots of camp memories. We didn't call it that though--if you hadn't posted a link, I never would have knowne what you were talking about.
I think we called it gimp (sp?) or something like that?
I'd love to start doing this with my girls (well Kathryn for now since I don't know if Lauren would be too interested at this point).
Good luck with your grandfather's watch, LacyJ

Boondoggle, huh, we called it gimp too.. Thanks, that's what I was lookin' for. After lookin' at the one on ebay, I was wondering if it is made on a base cord of something else. My hair is gettin' thinner and I don't want to use it all. Ha
I have my grandmother's hair receiver and have been saving hair for awhile. I need to figure out how to make it usable. It's pretty tangled, any suggestions???

I do this (not wth hair, but with plastic lacing) every now and then, I have a bag of plastic lacing. The only one I can do is the "square Stitch".

I have never heard of it, but it looks very interesting. I bet your DH will love your gesture. It is really neat.
