Exclamation Dee or anyone else who crochets - granny square question

Are granny squares hard to crochet? How do you join them together? What size crochet hook would you normally use?

My Mom used to make these all the time. Can't wait for the answer but I don't think they are too hard CJ.

Granny Squares are easy-peasy!! You can either slip stitch them together or single crochet them together.

As far as hook- (but I almost never crochet to gauge-so take this with a grain of salt )I use a standard size, G I think.

Granny squares are only double crochet and chains. So easy and they work up quick!!

If you need help, I would be glad to help in anyway I can

Yep easy, I can do 'em!
What's great about them is you can take them anywhere and work on them while your waiting at the doctors etc.

    here's mine from class. lol
It's not done. lol But just practice for reading patterns in class.

I used a g hook. Btw, this is not a good example. rofl I had several mistakes in it. I was more concerned with reading a pattern right than making the square.

I have troubles with patterns because once I get going, I stop reading the pattern and just work it out and I need to really READ and learn to read the patterns.

I don't think they're difficult. The nice thing is that there are so many different types.

Wow Sara, that is very nice. So when I look at it, it looks like 3 double chain and then 6 double chains in the corner. Is that right?

I want something I can take with me in the van and do while I'm sitting waiting for dh or were going into Winnipeg and were 3 hours in the van one way, kwim. I just thought granny squares would be so quick to do.

Corners are three double crochets, a chain stitch, and three more double crochets in the same hole....

Joining is pretty easy - as the others have said - I either "sew" them together or single them together.....

We're flying back to DC next month and I plan to take it as an easy activity for the flight....

    Looks awesome Sara!!

Yup, easy and gratifying because they work up so fast, this should really interest you Cj, because it is like quilting while crocheting.

Good luck and oh by the way, granny squares are fun because you can used up old tiny bits of yarn and keep them from being wasted and no two have to be alike to create a stunning afghan.

I have christmas stockings made from granny squares that my grandma made. She passed on a few years ago, so they are precious to me.

granny squares can be done any number of ways(double, triple, quadruple crochet stitches), at least this was what i was taught. i learned to crochet using granny squares. i did giant ones, so that the whole afghan was one huge granny square.

Hi girls this is Dee, Melissa is right, granny squares are any combination of stitches but double crochet is the basic one. I personally don't like doing them but they are any easy take along project.

CJ, I think it is usually done in 4 ply worsted weight yarn and a size G or H hook.

Another easy project to take along is Mile A Minute Afghans. They are done in strips and then put together. A lot less sewing together than granny squares.

Here is a baby afghan one: http://www.caron.com/pro_cuddlesoft3.html

I love doing granny squares! I use worsted weight yarns and an F or G hook.

Sometimes I make them solid color, sometimes a different color on each round. You can slip stitch , single crochet or sew them together.
