Grandmother's Flower Garden Afghan Designed by Brenda Stratton
For Designs For America from Solutia
Gauge: Each motif = 2 3/4" across. Size: Approx 40" x 54". Materials: worsted weight yarn "Caron Wintuk®", 100% Acrilan acrylic, 3 1/2-oz. skein: 10 skeins Off White (MC); 1 1/2 oz. each of 8 different colors (Col A); 1/2 oz. each of 8 coordinating colors (Col B). See Color Combinations below for colors used in sample. Crochet hook size 10/J (6 mm), or size to obtain gauge. Yarn needle. Color Combinations: Sample afghan contains 24 flowers, 3 each of 8 color combinations as follows (Col A/Col B): Dk. Iris/Violet; Medium Federal Blue/Dk. Colonial Blue; Royal/Cornflower; Persimmon/Peach; Lt. Persian Green/Dk. Persian Green; Lilac/Iris; Mist Green/Wintergreen; Light Rose/Raspberry. The darker colored yarn of each combination always forms the center of the flower. The remaining motifs are worked in Off White (MC). Motif (Make 413)
Follow color photo to plan color and layout of your afghan. Each flower consists of 6 motifs made with A and one center motif made with B. Work surrounding motifs with MC. Ch 4, join with a sl st to beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: (RS) Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), [dc, ch 1] 11 times in ring; sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4--12 dc and ch-1 sps.
Rnd 2: * Work 3 sc in next sp, sc in next dc, sc in next sp, sc in next dc; rep from * around, ending sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-4; sl st in top of beg sc--36 sc made. Fasten off (note: See Joining for option.). Weave in yarn end.
Joining
Refer to photo to sl st motifs tog, joining 4 flowers x 6 flowers; or, to join motifs as you work, do not fasten off at end of Rnd 2, but sl st last motif made in place to previous motif, then fasten off. Weave in all ends. Border
With RS facing, join MC to any st on outer edge of afghan. Ch 1, sc evenly around, working 2 sc in center sc at all points and dec 1 st across all seams. Fasten off.

I tried to make one of these a few years ago--- I got so frustrated making all those tiny motifs and then joining them together. I ended up making a small baby afghan and donating it to charity.
It is beautiful though--- just wish I had more patience.

LOL-I am ripping one of these out to make the granny squares!! I was frustrated with all the joining too!!
