Default sock knitting question.... I'm on a roll

Alright. I've made my first pair. Now, I want to make another pair, but the pattern I used for the first one said that 'small' would fit a size 7. I ended up having to use the 'extra large' pattern to fit my friend.

I want to make a pair for a man's size 10. Can I just increase and by guess and by golly try to make it the right size??? Is there a way of measuring so that I know how many to cast on? What's the deal all you sock knitters?

Babs, This is the way I figure out how many to cast on.

You need to know your gauge (tension) which is how many stitches per inch.

Once you have that you need to measure around the calf of the person you are knitting for at the spot where they want to the cuff to come up to.

Next multiply the # of stitches per inch by the measurement and you will get the # of stitches to cast on.

Measure down from where you want the cuff to start (on the persons leg) to the ankle bone and that will give you your length. Then measure the length of the foot and that will tell you how long to knit the foot (I know that sounds kind of obvious). The heel part is usually about three inches for a man but you can also measure that part too.

If you want to measure around the foot at the instep too you can . Multiply that by the # of st. per inch and that will give you an idea of the # of st you need to have when you pick up for the instep after turning the heel.

    Does that make sense?

I have a link somewhere for a pattern that illustrates all this. I will try to find it and post it for you.
