house slippers
made a pair for my mom (pink) and a pair for myself (verigated). The pink ones I made by hand, they took for ever, but they have alot of stretch (mom wears a sz 6.5) I found the pattern in a book called "10-20-30 minutes to learn to knit". The second one I kinda had the jist of how they were to be done, but I tell ya, my hands needed a break. So I sat down and figured it out on the kintting machine. The first pair is done all in garter stitch, but my machine doesn't so that, only stockingette. So I had to alter the pattern a little bit. The tension in the machine is different from that of my own, so I had to adjust for that a little bit as well. But all in all I did the same thing the pattern in the book did, but since the machine is quite a bit tighter, i had to add some to width and length. I wear a sz 5, but it was still too tight to use the same numbers as the hand knit directions. so for a machine, here's the pattern I came up with
e wrap 38 (add more if you have a larger than sz foot) sts. hang weighted hem. knit evenly for 7-7.5 (add more if you have a longer than sz 5 foot) inches. decrease one stitch on both ends, every other row until 26 stitches remain, cut yarn leaving a looooong tail. thread tail into a tapestry needle, pull through all stitches remaining on machine needles. remove from machine, remove weighted hem. pull thread tight to form the toe end. turn to wrong side out. sew seam of two edges that feed into the toe to with in 4 inches of the cast on end. secure yarn and clip off extra. Turn to right side out. Now you'll hand knit the ruffle. pick up evenly 20-24 sts along what will be the opening on the slipper (the cast on edge will be the HEEL). knit across. (now I did this in garter stitch, the whole ruffle, you could change it to be all in stockingette if you wanted, ir i guess skip the ruffle all together). Now, M1 in every stitch across, doubling the amount of stitches you will have. knit across evenly for at least an inch and a hal. more if you like a wider ruffle. bind off in knit. now turn to wrong side out again, and starting from ruffle end, sew heel seam shut using yarn and a tapestry needle. Secure yarn, clip, and turn right side out. Repeat for second slipper.
Took about an hour each slipper because i am a slow hand knitter.~~ Missy ~~
