    Question Knit vs Crochet

This may have been answered in the past and I just missed it but here's my question.

What's the difference between knitting and crocheting? I know the tools are different but what I mean is why do you pick one over the other? So tell me why you prefer to knit or why you prefer to crochet or why you do one sometimes and then do the other at other times. Man that's a mouthful!

I like crocheting for afghans etc... mainly because I crochet faster than I knit.

Knitting I reserve for sweaters and hats especially. The finished look is just so much more professional imo. I hate the ribbing used in crochet, it looks cheap and homemade to me and stretches out easily, jmo here. If I crochet a sweater I always knit the bands, i.e. the neck, bottom and wrist bands.

I'd pick knitting over crochet anyday for one reason only - because I can understand the instructions when it comes to knitting.

I agree with Dee though, doing afghans goes a lot faster crocheting.

I'm with Dee and CJ, crocheting is definitely faster. I do both though because of the different looks I get. Knitting imo is finer and more polished, crocheting is more earthy. Except for thread crochet, I like it because it is delicate and intricate.

I couldn't say I like one more than the other because they have different purposes for me.

I prefer to crochet because my grandmother taught me to do it, and she sat across the table from me-- so I crochet left handed (my dominant hand)

My mom sat next to me and taught me to knit - right handed. Knitting is work for me-- I only do it when I really, really love the pattern, or can't find a crocheted version.

I crochet when I have something to do fast or something to do lacy. I prefer crocheted laces over knitted. Also a hat and scarf set in tight singles can be done in an hour and a half. A life saver at Christmas. however, knitting uses about 20% less yarn than crochet, so there is no way on earth that I will use my handspun on crochet! Knitting is stretchy, crochet is not. crochet can be very very warm though... I attribute it to the 20% more yarn that is in each stitch.

Thanks. I'm still working on the knitting for now.
