HELP! Socks
I'm attempting to do the socks.
I've gotten all my stitches cast on and divided among three dpns. Only I don't understand how the tutorial (http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/So..._Beginning.htm)has me joining them. The picture looks 'backwards...with the working yarn on the left instead of the right (does that make sense?).
I can join with the three dpns, by just knitting into the first cast on stitch with the third needle, but I don't know if that would effect the whole thing because it does change the # of stitches on each dpn.
UGH! I thought I'd at least get to the heel before needing help

Heather I have never made socks or used dpn's but I just went and looked at that tutorial, which btw I think is a good one.
I think what is confusing you is that you are going to start (1st actual stitch) using the 1st cast on stitch as opposed to the last stitch which is what you do when using only 2 needles.
This is how the 'round' becomes joined together. If you started knitting the last cast on stitch first (like you do with 2 needle knitting) when you come around to the first cast on stitch, you will join it, but will also have a gap. Will probably look something like a missed or dropped stitch.
Does that make sense?~~ Dee ~~

Are you using 4 needles? If so, you use the 4th needle to knit with.
I'm not sure which pic you're looking at. (Is it the 'join detail'?) My working needle and yarn are on the right, like you're describing for yours.
Also, don't worry too much about the number of stitches on each needle. You can always redistribute them whenever you need to.
At this point, I think the most important thing is to make sure that you don't have a twist in your stitches.
ONE IMPORTANT THING FOR THE WHOLE SOCK: When doing socks for the first time, the instructions will look strange. Often. (Esp around the heel.) Ignore the feeling that 'this isn't right.' Just blindly follow for your first few socks. YOU WILL SUCCEED.
I wish you were here. You'd see it once, and you'd get it instantly. (BTW, that knitting in the round on 4 or 5 dpns was taught to me before I started the tutorial. Seeing it in person helped.)2012 Knitting in progress

Ok, I've got them joined. I think what was throwing me off was the picture...it's got quite a bit of "stuff" in it. The working yarn looked like it was coming from the left so I thought maybe I have to turn the work over, but that wasn't right either.
I joined with the fourth needle, and was buzzing along until I came to a purl between needles. Boy was that interesting to figure out. But I've got that too, now I just need to remember to ignore the needles I'm not working with.
I've got about 4 rows done already
Thanks ladies! Y'all are great!
EarlyBird, I'll remember that when I come to the heel and put my blinders on!
