Question Help with a sock pattern

I want to make socks for my sons and this is the closest pattern I can find that doesn't seem too complicated (and is for kids sizes).

    But I don't understand something.
The pattern calls for a set of four size 4 dpns and a set of four size 5 dpns. Got that.

But then when it gets to the heel part it says this:

    With needles 1 and 4, P across needle 1 then needle 4.
Um, if I'm only using a set of four dpns, how is there a needle 1 and needle 4 w/ stitches on it? Isn't needle #4 being used as the "working" needle?

    Here is the pattern:

    Thanks

Working in a round it's like a rectangle visually.

Needle #1 and #4 are in use as you work that corner.

It's a triangle of three needles at rest, but # 4 is your working needle. And I think that means as you are working off #1 needle.

And the 2 sizes, one is smaller so the ribbing is tighter.

I've done that knit 1 slip 1 for the heel and it makes a nice thicker and tighter patch for the heel.

It means the heel flap bit is on your #1 needle.

when you get down into the shaping bit, always put a bit of coloured embroidery floss in so you can keep track of which stitches are where.

I'm hoping Early Bird or one of the other sock knitters sees this. I'm not a sock knitter so much as an in the round knitter of hats, mitts and the occaisional pair of socks.

    Ooookay!!
I think I have it now. For that part of the heel, I'm only going to be using needle 1 & needle 4, right? I'm going to let the other two needles just hang there until I'm ready to do the gusset?

    YES!!!!

You kind of pick up and join in the gusset. You'll see it in the pattern as pick up 10 st on either side.

    That's where the st are.

They are the sides of those rows.

    Hope that makes sense.

    you gotta be careful.

One day it's a skein of yarn, next day 2, then 3 and pretty soon you need a knitter's anonymous 12 step program!!!!

you think you have it under control

you think YOU are in charge

but it creeps up, and next thing you know YOU ARE KNITTING AGAIN!!!!!

sob, sniff, and fessin' up to a bunch of equally obsessed women how you just slipped and fell into the yarn display at the local knitters supply and yarn dealer store.

    SPLAT

and that YARN just slithered it's soft warm cuddly self like a newborn kitten into your waiting hands

and you were LOST I TELL YOU LOST!!!!!!

I should sign up for the 12 step program...but I'd have to bring dh with me. He bought me 3 skeins of cotton, 1 skein of Patons wool (for his socks ) and a sock pattern book the other day. Cheered me right up!
