Question Opinion on a knitting pattern please?

    I want to make this:
    http://www.geocities.com/finkatt/angel.html
For a friend's baby. I've read the pattern over and I think I would only have to learn two things "yf" which I know means Yarn Forward, and using the "back stitch" to put it together. I assume that means to stitch through the back loops so it doesn't show?

The only other hurdle would be the actual following and keeping track of where I am in the pattern.

So do you think this is a pattern that a beginner-intermediate knitter could do?

I also want to do this hat, to go with the sweater:

I think I might start with the hat first, it's almost the same pattern only upside down....

Wow-- that's pretty, but more complicated than I'd tackle.

i think it wou;d be fun, but i agree it seems a little complicated, but OTOH if we don't challenge our skills we won't get better either. So...I'd say go for it. In sewing the backstitch means something different. lemme see if i can find what it means to knitting

Heather, I think you will be fine with the pattern. Just keep a pad of paper next to you to mark where you are in the pattern when you have to put it down. And I would recommend that when you do have to put it down, make sure you complete the row you are working on first.

Also just a tip, here where it says:

    1st pattern row: (right side) k2, * y.f., sl.1., k2 tog, p.s.s.o., y.f., k5, rep from * to last 5 sts, y.f., sl.1, k2 tog, p.s.s.o., y.f., k2.
yf, sl 1, k2, psso means to slip 1 as to knit. Generally when a pattern doesn't state which way to slip the stitch it means to do it as if you are knitting the stitch as opposed to purling.

Now I haven't actually worked this pattern up myself, so I could be wrong. LOL If you have any problems with it, just holler and we will help you all we can.

BTW the sweater and hat are just gorgeous and I'm sure your friend will be thrilled with them.

    Thanks Dee!
I have heard mixed opinions on when psso-ing whether to slip as if to purl or slip as if to knit. I tend to slip as if to knit if I'm in the middle of a knit pattern and slip as if to purl if I'm in the middle of a purl pattern.

I actually played with slipping in different directions with the sweater I'm doing right now and haven't noticed any difference in how the pattern looks or how the stitches behave either way. I only confused myself more lol.
