    Default March's Dish Cloth

Here's the pattern. I have to re-do it in a color that will show up in the pics.

I think it would also make a nice cuff pattern for a sock. OOOH!! Or, do them in regular or fancy yarns, and make a bunch and you could piece together an afghan...or simply do this on a larger scale.

Cast on 47 sts, using size 5 or 6 straight needles. Slipping first stitch of every row throughout, work 4 ridges of garter stitch (knit each row), ending with a Wrong side row.

Row 1 (WS): Sl1, k3, either remember this spot or stick a yarn marker here. purl to last 4 sts, place another marker, k4.
Row 2: Sl1, *k3, yo, sl next 2 sts as if to k2tog, k1, pass 2 sl sts over, k1, yo, rep from * to marker, end k4 ( you are making a hole with your yarn overs).
    Rows 3 and 4: Sl1, knit across.
    Rows 5–60: Repeat Rows 1–4.

Work 3 ridges of garter stitch. Knit 1 row (Right side), then finish in knit from the Wrong side. Weave in ends.

Make sense? I adapted this one from a pattern I had written down from somewhere. I can't for the life of me remember where it was I had found this.

I have a couple of questions...

    1. when you say "work 4 ridges in garter stitch" do you mean 4 rows or 8 rows (which would make 4 "ridges")?

    2. How do we know which side is the "wrong side" ?

    3. "sl next 2 sts as if to k2tog, k1, pass 2 sl sts over" - does this mean slip, slip, knit one, then pass the 2 slip stitches over the k1? Both of the slipped stitches at the same time or one at a time?

    4. "Rows 3 and 4: Sl1, knit across" - does this mean sl1, then knit the rest of the stitches across or does it mean slip 1, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1 all the way across?

Sorry for all the questions ops:
I have my needles & yarn ready to go though!!

    1. when you say "work 4 ridges in garter stitch" do you mean 4 rows or 8 rows (which would make 4 "ridges")? I worked 4 rows of garter stitch, as you are only working 4 stitches at the beginning and end of each row in garter st. This way the border will look 'even'.

    2. How do we know which side is the "wrong side" ? You will know this by the purl side of the stitches. The right side will have ridges that are created with rows 3 and 4.

    3. "sl next 2 sts as if to k2tog, k1, pass 2 sl sts over" - does this mean slip, slip, knit one, then pass the 2 slip stitches over the k1? Both of the slipped stitches at the same time or one at a time? NO, slip the first stitch at the beginning of each row, no matter what the pattern instructions for each row are, then knit the next 3 stitches (this is to help it from curling as you are only doing a 4 stitch border) The sl 2 sts as to k2tog, means just that. Insert your needle through the second st, picking up both at the same time and slip them to the other needle, then you k1, then pick up both slipped stitches at the same time and pass them over the k1 you just did.

    4. "Rows 3 and 4: Sl1, knit across" - does this mean sl1, then knit the rest of the stitches across or does it mean slip 1, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1 all the way across? [color=blue] Rows 3 and 4: Sl1, knit across YES this means Slip the first stitch only, then knit across the rest of the row.

Hope this helps Heather, I'll post a pic of mine in the next reply.

I changed the pattern a bit for me. I used size 7 needles, did not slip the first stitch on each row as I knit in pretty even tension, and I did 68 rows between the border rows (68 pattern rows) as I wanted it just a tad bigger.

Alrighty so I need to block it as it doesn't look like I knit in and even tension.

Okay I'll try again to explain it.

    3. "sl next 2 sts as if to k2tog, k1, pass 2 sl sts over" -
Picture yourself knitting 2 stitches together (k2tog), instead of wrapping the yarn around the needle and completing this, just insert your needle under the 2 stitches to be knit together and just pass them to the other needle without knitting them off.

Then you knit the next stitch, then pick up both slipped stitches at the same time and pass them over the stitch you just knit.

By doing this your are creating a hole in the pattern. That YO (yarn over) you do before slipping the stitches is keeping the stitch count even.
