    Default Prayer Shawl

I don't know how to knit of crochet but one of the ladies at my church started a prayer shawl ministry that I thought was a great idea to share. The ladies make a shawl and while they make it they pray. When they are done it goes to someone that is going through a tough time. They wear it while they pray. The shawl is knitted with knit 3 purl 3 to symbolize the trinity. Maybe this isn't a new idea, but I thought it was neat. Maybe some of you will feel led to start one at your church.

i have made 3 of these adn will be making one more this year once i take my sil to pick out yarn. the first one was for my dh's grandmother. his grandfather was dying from cancer and she was having a very hard time. i made her one to help her get through that.
the second was for my grandmother that was having issues after having to go into a nursing home after falling off her scooter.
the thrid was for a friend that was having a baby. i made her a shawl that she could use as a blanket for the baby or a breastfeeding cover up.

when my grandmother died, my grandfather gave me back the shawl i made for my grandmother.. it was red for love. i added a green border to it for hope and gave it to my sister who was having a hard time because her soon to be ex told her he didn't love her anymore and hadn't loved her for about 1.5 years.

my sil is having a baby in december and i want to make one for her and the new baby. it will be like the one i made for my friend and she'll be able to use it for a blanket or nursing shawl.

for the ones i made i just used the half-double crochet stitch
i made a chain for as wide as i though it should be and then just hd the whole thing until it was as long as i wanted. the one for my friend was a little wider than the one for my grandmother so i could make sure she would be covered when she used it for a cover up. the one for dh's grandmother i made wide enough and long enough to be used as a shawl. and the on for my gm i made so it could be used as a lap blanket. i didn't have any set number of chains to use. i just made a chain and tried it out to see if was wide enough. there have been a couple other prayer shawl threads on the boards that have some links with patterns.
