Baby socks :)
I made these on the drive down to the inlaws on Thanksgiving

And these are the socks I'm working on for Christmas presents.
These are for my youngest dd:

And these are for my oldest dd. The color is off a bit, they are pine green and ash gray stripes (not self striping yarn). She wants knee socks, which combined with the size of her feet (size 10.5!!) makes for LONG socks. So I'm doing both at once on one circular needle from the toe up. I've just finished where the heel will go and am working my way up the ankle now. I'll do an "afterthought heel" after the socks are done:

P.S. and I still can't figure out toe up, and two at once on circular needles. I tried and made a huge mess of it.

Oh wow, wish I could do that, I so love the blue ones. After seeing all your gorgeous work, I decided I'm going to give knitting a try. It will probably look like a 3rd grade art project, but I'll try. I don't have a lot of patience when I can't get something right....how hard is it? What is a good thing to start with, a scarf? How hard are bootie slippers or socks?

DAAC3DEC - I usually buy online for sock yarn because we have no true yarn stores around here. Just Michael's & Joann's.
Missy - have you checked out Judy's Magic Cast On at Knitty.com? That is the one I used to learn how to do it. Two at a time was challenging, it's the first time I've ever done it. Getting both toes on there was the hardest part. The next hardest was remembering which was the first foot, which is why I have a pin on the end of one toe
Right now, the biggest PITA is keeping all the yarns from tangling. I have FOUR skeins going at once, one of each color for each sock!!
Denise - for a first project, I would probably recommend practicing a dishcloth but not with 100% cotton. Cotton doesn't have any stretch to it, so it's hard on the hands to knit with. Scarves aren't too bad, but they seem to go on forever, which can be discouraging to someone just starting who wants to see some results ASAP. Also, with starting scarves as a first project, you may notice that the beginning of the scarf is messy & loose but it gets neater and tighter as you get closer to the end. That's because your tension and knitting skills are improving as you go along, so the scarf itself will be somewhat lopsided.
My only other advise...use a light colored yarn and perhaps wooden needles as opposed to metal. Wooden needles are less slippery so your stitches will be less likely to slip off the needle when you don't want them too
Thanks for the compliments y'all. I should have put something in the pictures of the baby socks for perspective. They are so itty bitty they fit on my fingers!!Last edited by YankeeMom; 11-27-2007 at 12:59 PM.

Heather, thanks so much for the tips, I had never thought to do a dishcloth, great idea! Ok, stand by for pictures, lol. Gotta dig up those knitting needles.
