spinning

Last year I visited my friend in Wisconsin and we went to a yarn shop where the owner spun her own fiber. She also made some beautiful hats, scarves and mittens using her own handspun and dyed yarn.

Has anyone on these boards tried spinning? What kind of fibre did you use and is it expensive to get started? I have been curious about starting an additional hobby that goes along with my crocheting. I did find some information on this but there is nothing like first-hand experience.

Unfortunately, I have not tried spinning more than the hair off the dogs and cats when they are brushed. I have heard though that it is easier to spin animal fiber than other things.

You may want to check at your local arts and craft store to see if they know of a local person who spins. Or find some people who belong to the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) as they tend to learn, practice and teach functional craft skills - it isn't all about the fighting and the swords and the victory.
