Default Social Security for the divorced

    Social Security for the divorced

If you were married for at least 10 years to someone who has earned benefits, you may be eligible to collect payments as well. Here's how it works.

i didnt open the link.. i just have a comment on social secruity that i found strange and not helpful for future retiring folks

i have an aunt that was married something like 20 years, SHE divorced him, a few yeas later he remarries and few years later she remarries, SHE divorces again after 2 years if that long, he dies both her and his current wife gets social security..that crazy IMO because she didnt want him when he was alive but when he died she wanted his money..so both of them get well over $1000.00 from him..thats one of the reasons why i probably wont have anything to draw off of in the furture..look at these men who have been married multiple times..i know there is a specific time you must have been married but still i find this unfair to all...i agree my aunt needs the money..but does she DESERVE the money? should more than one person be allowed to draw on ONE person..if only one person is paying, then only one person should be allowed to draw and if he was still married i think the current wife should have been the only one allowed to do so. and i think if you are divorced and not the person who passed was not married i dont think any Ex's should be allowed to draw off of it.

just my thoughts on social security i appologize if no one wanted to see it...lol i have kinda been a little bent since she started receiving it and i know she really needs it but i think the govt is so screwed up for the most part..have a great day..: P

This information brings up a major question for me. Perhaps someone here can help me understand how this affects me?

My situation : I was married for 24 years to my husband. We divorced. We stayed divorced for a couple years, and then due to what I consider a blessing we got remarried last year.

So ... we were divorced after a very long marriage and then remarried to each other again. After we remarried, I got to thinking about this subject and called the Social Security Admin and asked them would I be able to draw off his benefits if something should happen to him. I asked because even though I work also he has always made WAY more than me.

The guy who answered my question said no I would not be able to draw from his benefits, unless we were married ten years again. Well I HOPE we make it a lot longer than ten years, but nobody is promised tomorrow. I just assumed if something happened to my husband and we haven't made it to the ten year mark again, I would have to draw on mine. (which would only be between two and three hundred a month I think)

This article kinda confuses me b/c it makes it sounds like if you remarry, you CAN collect if marriage ends again due to death or divorce.... I don't plan on ever divorcing again ( I pray!!) but I'm still unclear on what would happen should my husband pass away before we are married ten years again?

I dont mean to sound morbid, but I do worry. My cousin just passed the other day and he was only 49, just a few years older than us.

Well I hope this made sense.. I'm just confused about it. It's already said and done so there's no need to worry about it, heck by the time we reach retirement who knows if any of us will be able to draw any benefits but I'd still like clarification if someone understand how this would work for me... ?

Thanks in advance for any help understanding this ... :-)
