I think it is important to teach kids to do nice things with no expectation of a reward.
I have no problem at all tipping a hardworking waiter/waitress; in fact I like over tipping the person if they do an excellent job. I also like to tell them. Who doesn't like sincere praise?
On the other hand, I am sick of tip jars for every little thing. I picked out my drink, brought it to the counter and there is a tip jar. Should I tip the cashier? Not in my opinion.

The states have gotten bad about wanting to be tipped for everything. I went back for 3 weeks after being in Europe for 4 years and was amazed! I saw tip jars at Starbucks, fast food places, ice cream parlors, etc. I've also heard that the suggested amount for tipping is now 20%!
Like Momof3Girls- I have no issue with tipping a waitress for a job well done. But I'm not tipping someone when I have to go to the counter, stand there and wait and carry the item away myself.
I think if the lady tipped that boy, it's doing a disservice. THe boy did the act out of goodness- no with the motive of getting money which he may learn if she had tipped him.Wife to Air Force DH for 7 years.
SAHM to twin boys, Samuel and David!
