First time ever canning!
I am so excited, I had to share! I have never canned before. My mother-in-law used to can more, but just does a few different jellies now. I told her I was interested in learning since we have a pretty good size garden now as well as a pear tree and an apple tree. So she invited me over one day to watch her do a batch of grape jelly. The following day she came to my house and helped me can a batch of pears. She gave me a canning cookbook and loaned me her canner pan. The next day I made and canned a batch of Pear Apple Jam all by myself! Yum!
I want to try Pear Jam next. I am waiting to borrow my mother-in-law's canner again. A lady at our church said she has a canner and a pressure canner that I can have, she just has to check and make sure they are still good since she hasn't used them in awhile... that would be awesome! Look out, bigger garden coming next year!
Anyways, I just had to share. I'm so proud of myself! lolSherry

that pic is beautiful. Canning is so rewarding!!! The idea of you getting a pressure canner for free is awesome. Post the type you have and ask for advice. There are FV people who can tell you exactly what to look for and what to do. Like you may get that gauge checked and seals replace.

You are going to have so much fun!
I love canning and put up as much as I can. You will also love pulling a jar from the shelf in the middle of winter, it just puts a smile on your face!Pine trees, with their needles pointing up to heaven, represent everlasting light and life.

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragment!
So I went to the lady's house today to check out the canning stuff. Its been alot of years since she canned! The canner pan had a hole in it.
But she said I can use the pressure cooker pan to boil proccess stuff. The lid from the canner pan fits on it so I won't have to worry about it accidently sealing on me. Do you agree that I can use it that way?
The pressure canner is old. I have it soaking right now to try to clean it up. I think it had some hard water in it for some time, has deposits in it... and black spots, I think from sitting. Do you think once its cleaned up if I get a new seal/gasket thingy for it that it function and be safe? Or are there other things I should check?
Also, any tips to get it clean?
I also ended up with a jar lifter, a wire colander, a strainer for in the pan when blanching, a vintage juice strainer with pestle, and a big roaster pan that she used to keep her jars hot in.
I think all I need now the little magnetic thingy to get the lids out of the hot water. Yay!
I am so thankful. our finances are really tight and this is going to help so much!
Edited to add: I just poured the water out of the pressure canner to scrub it some more, and there are divets worn into the inside of the pan. will this hurt anything?Sherry

My mother-in-law stopped over and she said that the worn spots are just pitting from being used, its cast aluminum I guess.

way to go...........they look yummy........
It is great to know that you have some TRULY WHOLESOME food in your 'larder'.................enjoy........have fun and don't forget to try
new recipes!!
Oh..........and don't be "sucked into" the sales pitch that you need every tool they have for canning.............as for the above mentioned.........if you have a pair of tongs..............it will work. I STILL don't have
the 'magnetic thingy'...............and probably won't be buying it anytime soon................cheap or not. Or make your own.....

So excited for you - I want to learn to can things so much, both for myself and to make holiday gifts.
Your jam looks beautiful. I'm so jealous. (It would kill me - severe apple allergy - but still so so jealous.)
