Well, you guys were right. Daisy has a UTI.
$200 later, she will be just fine., 2 weeks of antibiotics.
Thank you so much for the great advice!

Oh Karen, I'm sorry poor Daisy (and now you too LOL) has a UTI, but it is a common thing. Glad you took her and found out so she can be back to herself in no time and you can stop cleaning up her messes.

Any ideas on how to get the stench of cat pee out of my carpet in the basement?

To get the stench out... throw out the carpet.
LOL!
no really, when my cat went through that- bleh! I couldn't stand it.
I tried Febreeze.. it lasted 30 seconds.
I tried high priced pee removal stuff - smell came back after the perfume faded!
I tried sprinkling baking soda - maybe I did it wrong, or not enough, or in the wrong place- smell was still there (I think it should have worked.)
The best thing for me was vinegar and water mix. Spray it on, spray some more... and some more.. till you think you've sprayed enough... then some more.. b/c this is the end of the line. "If this doesn't work... I'm getting rid of the couch!"
It worked.
Except, interestingly enough, my son just came home from college and said "the spare couch smells... can I get rid of it?"

You could try Nature's Miracle. You really have to saturate the carpet with it and repeat a few times. Good luck! Sorry about your kitties UTI but at least its something medical not behavioural. This is at least treatable.

I second the Natures Miracle or a product called OUT! I know you can get that last one at Walmart..
Did the doc prescribe a lower magnesium food too? Like I said in my previous post, after feeding that Purina brand one to my cat, no more uti's & the headaches that come with them.~*Darlene*~

We are going to work on switching her food after she is feeling better. Daisy is the world's pickiest cat. I have had a terrible time getting her to eat anything but CatChow. Anytime I put something else in her dish, she goes on a hunger strike and loses several pounds.
I have tried a few products, including Out. No luck. It really stinks down here. I really do not want to have to replace this carpet, ugly as it may be!
She is no longer peeing outside the litter box but it is clear she is still not feeling well. She is puking every other day. I called the vet and she said some cats do that when they are on antibiotics.
Todays activity will be to soak the stinky spot in bleach and once it is dry put a throw rug over the white spot!

I use this stuff called OdoBan. It's a spray and I get it in the grocery store around the same area that they have Febreze. I absolutely soak the carpet. Our house doesn't smell anymore.

I cover the spot with baking soda and borax. Let it sit overnight, then vaccuum up. I follow it with a steam clean too.

Also try a baking soda, peroxide and dish soap combination. You can google it under skunk spray remedies. This really works!! Our cat had a UTI - but we could never catch him in the act and then the vet didn't think it was one. Well $900 and blocked bladder later - he was fine! Good luck with the smell.
