Default There Is A Thief In Our Midst!!!

Today, while being a dilligent little gal, cooking and baking away in Eric's kitchen, I had wonderful, grandious plans -- crockpot stew, homemade carrot soup, cornbread and a batch of breadcrumb cookies.

The kitchen smelled lovely, the cookies came out flawless (despite lack of a proper cookie sheet), the beef stew simmered happily in the crockpot (borrowed from my mother), and the carrots for the soup were dancing merrily in a pot of boiling water (though this pot is the skinniest little sheet of metal with a handle I've ever seen!). I felt very pleased and satisfied with my productivity and felt I deserved a much needed rest/bathroom break before I commensed the making of cornbread.

Out of the room I stepped, quite confident in my ability to keep things going happily and without chaos. Little did I know that my every move was being watched, silently and without movement, by two sets of dark brown eyes.

I returned to the kitchen periodically to observe my creations and be sure they were doing fine. At one point, however, I noticed that the 1/3 of a block of margarine that had been sitting on the counter (WELL out of reach, I had thought) was missing!

Now, I know one should never be considered guilty without evidence. So rather than blame anyone, I went searching for my missing margarine. I scanned the kitchen and discovered all was as it should be. I then made my way, sneaking quietly, into the livingroom, where I discovered my first piece of evidence -- the shredded remains of a breadbag lying on the carpet by the patio door. Hmmm... my hunch is now getting stronger!

I moved now outside the patio door and out onto the back deck, where I discovered Exhibit A: the crumpled remains of a completly clean margarine block wrapper, its copper-colored coating glistening in the overcast sunlight. There was no escape now -- I had caught the thief! I stepped out into the vast unknown that is Eric's back yard and made my way to the two guilty parties that sat with their noses buried into the ground. Suddenly I stopped short -- I had caught this mischievious pair red-handed committing ANOTHER act of theft!

What did they take, you ask? A cookie? A piece of roast from the crockpot? A slobber of the carrot soup? No, no, they're too clever for that -- they decided to go for the BIG kill...

... the entire bag of cornmeal.

That's right. They both had their noses buried in the grass, covered in little grains of golden cornmeal, the bag torn to shreds around them.

What does one do in a situation like that? Punish them for their wrongdoings? Sit and cry at the theft of something so precious? Run away due to the massive stress of the valued loss?

Well, in my case, I grabbed my cell phone and started taking pictures and texting them to Eric!

How funny! My animals have done this once or twice, but I can't really get on to them because it's usually pretty funny. On occasion the cats will the they are clever and will toss something yummy on the ground only to have it stolen by the canines waiting below! One time they worked together to eat a $5 bill!

I don't know what the solution is, just watch out for them I guess.

That is too funny! My mom set a brownie pan out on the deck railing a few years ago, only come out to see if it had cooled and it was missing! Their beagle had dragged the pan back to his dog house and ate the whole thing! Luckily (with chocolate being so bad for dogs) he lived...however, he barked non-stop for 3 days!

My collie ate the ends off 4 loaves of zucinni bread, he didn't even have to get up on the counter to do it he was so tall. I thought I had them back far enough but he was able to eat an inch off each one. I baked these for a church thing so I cut off another inch and sliced them up anyway. Dogs are just the funniest.

I would watch them for tummy upsets that's a lot of cornmeat!

Your whitish dog looks like a little lamb with those ears! I don't think it was him, he looks too inocent. He must have been trying to talk the other one out of the crime!

Keep an eye on their skin. Many dogs have corn allergies. If they get itchy after this, they may scratch until they are bloody.

You can make a penny can to fix the counter surfing problem. Get an empty pop can and put about ten pennies in it. Tape the top closed. Put it on the very edge of the counter and put some super yummy goody on top of it. When the dog pulls it off of the counter, the penny can makes a god awful noise and usually this will deter them in the future. IF you can catch them, a squirt in the face with a water bottle works well too.

Great pictures BTW. Is the brindle dog a Pit? Bull breeds are my absolute favorite dogs. I have owned bullies for over 25 years!
