That list, and of course some research of my own, has lead me to my dogs a totally raw diet.

I think it's very important for pet owners to know exactly what they are feeding their pets and I think it's great that you posted it.

Good for you for taking the time to make a diet for your dogs that is consistent with what they need to thrive! I have been making a raw food diet for my cat's (one cat now, as the other two passed on) for several year's now. i do supplement it with a holistic dry food called WELLNESS as well. I have said it many times ...that if it is something that I will not eat, nor shall any of my pets! It does not take long to make raw food for the week and store it.

With all of the "food" that our beloved pets are being fed, is it any wonder that they too are dying from degenerative diseases?

It's not a wonder to me at all because I've taken the time to read the bag and what I find on a good portion of those bags makes me ill. I wouldn't feed that filler laden kibble to my dog for love nor money.

My dogs love chicken, goat, venison, turkey, canned mackral ( rinsed) to just name a few and of course fresh fruit and veggies are a must with some brown rice.

I just love the reaction ppl give when you tell them you feed your dogs raw. My vet however has nothing but praise about my dogs. Now here in Jamaica ppl think I'm just plain nuts for wasting good food on my dogs. They claim that they will begin to crave blood by eating raw meat....silly ppl ..LOL

It's no surprise to me what is in some dog foods - I used to live near a chicken processing plant, and occasionally got stuck driving behind a 'gut truck' as it left the plant.

Feet, blood, feathers, bones - all considered acceptable forms of "protein" for the dog food companies.

You mean you've never had chicken foot soup?! You are missing out!

My dogs love chicken feet...( nail removed first) the bones help keep their teeth clean. They also love the neck. Raw chicken bones are perfectly fine for dogs to eat ( either clean or with meat)....it's only when they are cooked that they can cause a problem.

I forgot to add in that the 'gut truck' also contained beaks, and any unused internal organs. Even those that an animal in the wild would not eat, having a natural instinct NOT to eat that part of the animal because it could make them sick.

What in that would make a wild dog or a wolf ill? If you see them feed you will see that there very little left over. While I don't feed beaks and feathers to my dogs..there's nothing in a chicken that would make them sick. (unless the chicken was bad...and I don't feed alot of skin because it will give them the runs or really soft poo)

Hmmm....actually animals in the wild do eat the internal organs and beaks and such. Probably not in the manner that the "gut truck" is transporting them in, but they do eat the innards.

I'm a raw feeder. My guys get such things as chicken liver and kidneys, chicken feet, raw green tripe from ruminants etc... Those things have enzymes, calcium and other good things that the dog does need in their diet.
    It is what it is.

Is there a recommendation for the best "over the counter" dog food? I feed my dog dry dog food and would gladly switch to a healthier brand. I can't find on the site where it lists the brands that are good/bad....

The best one that I have found is WELLNESS Holistic dog or cat food. On the days that I give my cat her dry food, I make sure that it always has a pancreatin veg. enzyme sprinkled into it. This way she is still getting her enzymes that she needs in order to thrive. I also place ionic liquid minerals into her water dishes.

First of all..stay away from anything sold in Wal Mart or the grocery store. Having said that...there is one food that doesn't look too bad at Wal Mart..it's called Lamaderm Lamb and Rice. Wheat, corn, dairy, and soy free..you dont' have to feed a huge amount of this kibble..it's worth a look and you can find them online. I'ts actually priced pretty well too..an 18lb bag is less than $20.

Wellness is a good brand as well. Diamond isn't too bad although it does give some dogs the farts. LOL. I personally wouldn't feed kibble with corn, wheat, soy or dairy or animal digest, and you want to make sure that MEAT is always listed as #1.

I make my dogs food so that I know what goes into it. But in the event that I am lazy I feed him WELLNESS. I can not say enough good things about WELLNESS brand dog food.

I'm not cooking or otherwise preparing food for my dog. Sorry, I can barely keep up with cooking for my human family and there are some things I won't do for my pup.

We feed Hannity Evo Red Meat. The bag that I got for her last time was $60. Now that we switched her from that cheap-o beneful and pedigree, she gets exactly what the bag says she needs. I can't afford to feed her to fatness on this diet.

On another note, she now has expensive tastes. She no longer topples my trash can or sneaks that bits that the kids leave on their plates and walk away from. I've turned my dog into a food snob.

I got my recommendation for food from dogfoodanalysis.com
