Default Why do cats pee on everything

Gah, my cats are just being cats, I would say. I just don't understand why they are peeing all over the house.

I've got the 3 litter boxes set up for the three. I do what they say too.

    Cats are just jerks sometimes.

Palooka there are a billion and one different reasons why they do it and once you figure out why they do it, they might change the rules, lol.

Sometimes they don't like the type of litter, the depth of the litter, that other cats used their box, being angry or stressed or just because they FEEL like going outside of the box. My vet said that sometimes they develop a preference for what they like to go on.

I'm lucky with my current cat... he only goes in the box, but my ex-BF's cat used to take liberties with my clothes. Soo frustrating. I hope you find a solution for this soon!

Our cat used to go on the bed when she was getting a urinary track infection. As soon as she went on the bed we knew to take her to the vet. As she got older she started doing this more frequently. We'd take her in and the vet would say "nope, no UTI this time". After a few times of this (washing a mattress is no fun, nor is covering it with plastic or replaceing it), the vet offered to put her down. Basically he said once they decide/get use to going somewhere else it's hard to break them. Now the side note to this is that neither of us are really cat people, but I found her as a kitten in a dumpster, infested, and very sick with the rest of the litter dead not too long after I first moved out on my own. Now the cat's been around 20 years and DH and I started dating about 17 years ago so she's been around longer. Every time the cat used the bed it's been on his side and a couple of times on him . It shouldn't be funny but I think it is. DH refused to have her put down and I couldn't do it so we just locked her out of the bedroom. After a year or so we started leaving the door open again at night but we still close it up during the day if we're not there.

Another reason cats will pee like that is to mark their territory. You can tell the difference if its a territory thing or something else just by the way the cat sprays. If it is backing up to things, and "squirts" its marking. If it is squatting then it is just peeing. There is a huge difference in the two things, as spraying usually has a different meaning than just peeing outside the little box. If the cat hasn't been "fixed" that will also help stop both problems, but a trip to the Vet is a must to figure out why this is going on. Be sure to talk to your vet, there is help for both type problems....and it makes for a much happier pet and pet owner when you know why this is going on.

I wish I could figure this out too. No UTI. The female cat (older) doesn't pee on anything. The boy doesn't spray (both are fixed) but he pee's on clothes left on the floor. That's it.

We are having the same problem as Nomad. I just think it is impossible to determine what is going on in a cat's head. Some time's it is a physical problem. Or, it could relate to a bad experience they had at the litter box. Our cat loves to sleep with us but will wee the bed, thus ruining the experience for us. We have checked all we know and determined we don't have a clue. I wish you the best on your problem.

rooted nomad....i am so glad that you went against your vets 'advice' and didn't put your kitty down....so maybe she has some 'issues' (don't we all)....you are TRUE animal lovers when you are willing to put up with things that aren't so perfect (and sometimes a terrible pain in the rear)...(i KNOW- i put up with it for 17 yrs)....she's VERY lucky to have you guys....

Revenge? My three cats punished me for leaving them last weekend by peeing in a corner of the kitchen. They haven't done it since I've been back, but I'm worried that they will develop a habit of using this corner. (I had a nineteen year old cat suffering from kidney failure who used to pee in this corner when it got too hard for him to make it to the litter box. The pee smell is probably still there, somehow, even though I have replaced the flooring since then.)

raineydaye put a potted plant or something in the corner... (heck-put a box...anything) leave it there for about a week or two and they will probably forget about it....but do it right away to prevent another 'mishap'....
