    Default Carsick Puppy

Our new puppy gets horribly carsick. Today, during a twenty minute ride to the Vet, he vomited and defecated. It was so bad in his crate we had to give him a bath immediately after getting home. He had a similar problem on the trip when we got him but that was an hour and a half. Does anyone have a way to prevent this. It was ten hours since he had last eaten. We have had cats do this but all of our dogs loved to ride. The Vet seems to think he will reach seventy pounds so we have some big messes in our future.

Now that is a seriously cute pup!!

My current dog/pup is a 1 yr old. He gets major car sick if he has food or water before travel time. I usually crate him in the car so I understand the need for the bath.

I have found that if DH is with me on the ride and I or DH hold Wookie and crack the car window a little he doesn't get sick.

One of the S-I-L's swears that he will "out grow it". He has had 2 dogs that got car sick and at about 2 yrs got over it.

Call your vet--I seem to recall giving them dramamine helps--but please check to verify before trying.

We have 2 dogs that both got carsick as puppies and they grew out of it. Having them sit and not stand in the car does help sometimes!

When we travelled with our American Bulldog (about 90 pounds of dog), when he was a puppy, we used to give him half a tablet of dramamine and it helped. I seem to remember the vet saying that Benadryl would help too (basically, make him tired for the ride) but we never tried it. I would talk to the vet and see if they have any advice!

What kind of dog is he? He is absolutely adorable!

I truly think its a puppy thing. I have a couple websites here that explain about puppies and their ears and why it makes them so sick. As soon as he gets a little older it will settle down. Just hang in there.....

I had the same thing, it took a couple of years before my dog out grew it, however what I did find that works great is ginger. You can get liqui-gel capsules at the health food store. I just gave one about 30 minutes before a ride and it worked great! Just like ginger calms my stomach, it worked for her.

I little puppy gets car sick too. She is almost three years old. We don't feed or water about four hours before a trip. Usually she does just fine.

Good Luck. You new baby is a cutie

The Vet told us yesterday he is part Pit Bull. The other part is not readily apparent now. He estimated his mature weight at sixty-five to seventy pounds. It will work out as we wanted a small dog anyway. He has a ridge of fur down his back like a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Personally, I think a Pit Bull mated with the energizer bunny to produce him. Thanks for all of the great suggestions. I hope he outgrows his problem.
