Frontline flea/tick med
I need to get frontline for my dog and cat but the cost is big! I am finding $90 for a 3 month supply online (petmeds.com etc) (for the dog cat i havent checked yet)
there are similar products in the grocery store (application tubes) for $10-15 but I am wondering about their quality/effectiveness
any advice?
THANKS!

I just had this conversation with my dental hygienist!
I've always used prescription on my dogs, but with two 90+ lb brutes, I have to buy the biggest (and most expensive) doses. (And mine includes heartworm preventative.) She tried some pet store brand, and she said her dog developed a horrible reaction to it. Itching, rubbing the spot raw, etc. I think she used Hartz. I know there are a lot of them out there, so others may have worked better.
I don't use it in the winter, even though all the vets tell you that you should, because it gets cold enough here that I don't see fleas/ticks from about October through March. So I typically skip Nov, Dec, Jan, and Feb, and use it the rest of the year. I also buy the six-packs, because I get a seventh dose free with six. That pretty much takes me through the year.DH aka Mad Hen

We use Frontline. We only use a dose every two to three months. We also don't use it in the winter months so we use just three doses per dog per year. It works for us, but our dogs spend much more time on the couch than in the grass.

I have used Bio-Spot but not to resolve an existing problem so I can not vouch for true effectiveness. http://www.kvvet.com has decent prices but they don't sell Frontline.
You could call Frontline and ask them who they sell to online so you will know who carries the real product, hopefully, and compare from there.

I have heard and read some horror stories about the stuff you can buy at the grocery store/Walmart. We are talking about your pets' health.
f you already have a flea problem you need to deal with that. WASH/CLEAN/VACUUM all areas in the home that the dogs have come in contact with and treat the yard. You need to do all of this at the same time AND bathe the dogs with flea shampoo and then repeat in 10 days.
I use Frontline Plus in the spring and summer (kills the eggs too) and regular Frontline every other month in the fall and winter. A friend recently recommended www.deadfleaz.com.
I have been buying directly from a vet that I used to buy from on eBay. He gives me lower prices when I buy direct from him because he doesn't have to pay the listing and selling fees to eBay. If you are interested, PM and I will send you his email address.

Hartz is HORRIBLE stuff. Also, it is animal=specific. Do NOT use the dog product on cats--it can kill them (as can the Bio Spot stuff).
I buy the big tubes and divide it amongst my animals. Ask your vet for the proper dosage. I use a syringe (minus the needle) to draw it up and keep the excess ina small bottle. Works great!

Frontline is the best. The Walmart brand does nothing, as far as we could tell. We use Frontline about every other month in the summer, and maybe once during the whole winter. If I see fleas on the other dogs mine plays with I use the Frontline.

I use advantix which I like better than frontline but I don't like any of the stuff ~ it's so caustic it just kills me to put it on my dogs (and I used to work for a vet, LOL). It's all expensive but at my vet you can buy just one month at a time so try asking at yours.
I should use it 12 months a year since we have fleas and ticks all year and I buy 6 months (with another month free) but it is expensive. I usually skip Dec, Jan, Feb.Nancy

i buy mine online at ebay.com
i have small dogs so i buy the advantage kit
its a big dog tube, with a vile and a syringe, i measure out .04 and it last 10 months for a 10lbs and under and it cost 18.97 free shipping
and it works just as well as buying it at the vet and the seal is never broken on the tube. just look for your size pet
i also recently heard that garlic and brewers yeast tablets work they are 3.00 at walmart for 250 tablets and it goees by pounds 1 pill a day per 10lbs

We use frontline. When we lived in Florida I used to get it at a local feed store. Was cheaper there than at the vets. I haven't found a feed store that carries it here. I saw in our PETCO sale flyer it is 15% off this week, thought I haven't checked yet to see what the final cost is. We also don't use it during the winter months.

I use bio spot and have had really good luck with it..It is 1/2 the price as frontline and I think it work better..I have used advantix k too but it too got to be more than I could afford..If you can give both pets a bath in regular dawn dish soap the day before and then put it on they say that it really works even better. You want to wait 24 hrs before you put any of that stuff on after a bath..make sure that you follow the directions on any of this. They just put out a report that there have been more deaths of pets from all of these products that a year ago...

Frontline didn't work for us at all. It made a bald spot on my dogs neck. The vet said it happens w/ some sensitive dogs. We use sentinel, it is both heartworm meds and flea pill in one. It doesn't kill the fleas but makes them sterile. It costs us about $18. a dog for 9 months=$162.x3 dogs=$486. a year but they have a rebate of $25. per 10 and heart worm treatment is about that a dangerous to older dogs. So $464. is doable.

We had been fighting fleas for about 2 months..the wal mart stuff was like water and the fleas just laughed..So
I sent Hubby to the vet to get flea medicine for the cats. Two single doses for the cats was $26and change. He of course wasn't going to get it. Then the lady told him that he could buy 1 dog dose, divide it between the cats. She even gave him the syringe to draw it up and a small bottle. He asked how much..$17.83. So he came home with the dog dose, divided it up, put it on the cats and still has enough left for another cat dose. Guess what we will be doing in the future?
He asked why more people weren't told about it..and the lady saud..Most people don't want to deal with having to measure it out, put it on the cats and then store the rest. Hubby told her, not me I would rather have 9 in my pocket.Bear..You left

Well since I dont have any human children. I have a dog and a cat. I used to use Frontline on my dog but even with her being an indoor animal she still got fleas. I talked to my vet, and he told me about Comfortis. It is a small pill and I can hide it in a hot dog for her so that is what she gets and that stuff is awesome!! We use something else for heartworm prevention I think maybe Atvantiks. I dunno. I am not taking any chances with my little furries!
