    Default Welcome to the ranch

As some of you know, I recently gave away my remaining chickens, because I didn't feel I could keep them safe from my neighbor's idiot dogs. It was very hard to give them up, and I really missed the sound of the roosters. I had one black Giant Jersey rooster, several GJ hens, and two Aracaunas left.

When the chickens left, I had about a week's worth of eggs from them. I put them in the incubator, more out of tribute to the hens than out of any belief they would hatch. They had been sitting out on my counter for several days, and I just couldn't bear to eat the last of my hens' eggs.

I had decided to throw them out at the end of the week, if nothing happened. Well, you guessed it, tonight, a new life came into the world - a little black Giant Jersey baby. So I guess I'll give the other eggs a few days. There is one Aracauna egg in the batch, so we'll see if I end up with another chicken mutt.

Cute So are you going to raise these, or just get them big enough to give away ?

My plan this spring is to get one of those dog kennel yards and attach to our chicken coop. We don't have problems with dogs, but coyotes getting too close. Also some hawks in the summer.
We ( I ) want to raise up some babies to sell. So have a bigger flock in the summer, and drop back to about 20 birds or less in the winter. I been thinking about letting a couple of the hens hatch naturally so would need some extra area for them and the chicks away from the main group. Some eggs will go in the incubator too. Baby chicks are fun

I now have TWO, as another egg hatched last night. For now, I'm going to raise them inside as pets. They'll have a pen in the finches room, and they will be allowed out under supervision only. I haven't decided yet whether I'll keep them. If I can figure out a way to keep them happy and healthy, and to have a real life, I'll keep them. If not, I'll find them a safe home.

And I am open to names, but they have to be asexual, as I won't know for months if these are hens or roosters!
