Escargot
Hello,
The Hermit Crab thread reminded me of this.
We have been planning on raising escargot in a large aquarium this spring. I've found loads of information online, and everything seems fairly simple. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with snails?
All I know about them right now, really, is that they're delicious when baked in garlic butter!

Oh, one cool thing that I did find out about a week ago is that there are no snails or snakes that can't be eaten! How neat is that?

Not sure about raising snails as pets but only know them as tasty food. I prefer the black bean and garlic sauce myself vs garlic butter & cheese

I've never eaten them, and know nothing of the species, but if they are typical snails, expect population explosions.

I have tried them 1 time at a fancy French restaurant. They were chewey and flavored with the garlic and butter mixture. I suppose that they were wonderful to those that enjoy that type of cuisine. I can at least say that I tried them, don't think I will order them again.
Now,.... on to rattlesnake.

The way to start is with garlic butter & cheese...be prepared for a weird texture/taste so when you taste the familiar garlic/cheese combo you should be ok...just know its supposed to be different. I tried this version at The Keg Steakhouse.
The kind of snails you get with the garlic and cheese are diff then the kind you get at the Asian restaurants - if they serve - w/the black bean and garlic sauce.
EW...I'll pass! I saw snake being served up on tv - you can buy frozen rattlesnake - blech. But having said that - if you take it off their skeleton and chop it up so it looks like chicken (supposedly thats what it tastes like) then I prob would try it but only if I can't see it in snake shape form. Just gives me the willies.

I, actually, my whole family loves escargot. Once I've seen a documentary show about raising 'snails' as a business, very interesting. Good luck!

I don't find them any more disgusting than clams, oysters, lobster (it's a giant roach) or hot dogs.
They're a lot like clams, in that they are chewy (not slimy like oysters) and have a mild flavor (which is why they are doused in garlic). Like clams, a snail is essentially just a piece of muscle tissue.
I'm interested in how the experiment goes, please keep us posted.Use it up, Wear it out,

Have tried snails. But for me didn't find them to exciting. Is interesting that you want to raise them for food. Not something that would come across my find to do. But hey, this is the frugal village.

Used to love them as a kid. Never thought of raising them, what an interesting idea!
