    Default Advice Please

I lost my beautiful black cat, Little Girl, to cancer in November of last year. I am planning to adopt two cats in September (after summer holidays) and I was wondering if I happen to get another black cat whether I will expect him/her to be like my Little Girl (who was everything to me) which would be unfair to the cat. Has any one had similar experience(s)?

    Thank you in advance.

    It's a cat.

By which, I mean, it won't *CARE* what you think it should be like. It will make SURE you know what *IT* is like.

Get yourself a new cat. Enjoy the new discovery.

I gotta agree with Greebo (well, I don't gotta but I do on this). Every one of my cats, most have been black and black/white markings, has had their own distinct personality. They will never fit your expectations but will make you love them for who they are.

Yes, because if you don't love them for who they are, they will sleep on your face at night in an attempt to murder you.

    Isn’t it the truth.

When I was growing up my cat often used my sis's bed for a toilet. I really miss that cat. I have never come across another I was that close to.

Twinkle, I think I understand what you mean. I lost my Suki Girl last September 11th. My heart is still broken. She was mine and I was hers for the last 10 years, and as much as it may be hard for some to understand, I've never been so grieved by the loss of anyone in my life. Not even my Father or my Grandmother. Someday we will welcome a new puppy to our family, but not yet. Even before I read your post I had been thinking about how I would feel about a new puppy, I could not expect her to be like our Suki, but I certainly can not deny that there would be the potential for deep disappointment. Our Suki was like no other, she was perfection. So yes, I'm worried. I'm worried that I'll make a choice of a new puppy and not be able to bond with her.

    Twinkle,

I've been a cat enthusiast all my life. I was four years old when my first cat followed me home. I called him kitty so long we had to name him something that rhymed, so "Nitty Gritty Kitty" became his name.

In fact, our most recent cat, Caesar, is very similar in appearance to a cat we had to put down - Mercury - and yet in behaviors, totally different.

So I assure you, I wasn't "being funny" - the nature of cats simply *IS* funny. The cat will not care what pre-conceived notions you may hold about it, it will be itself, and you will not find yourself thinking of the new cat as if it were your old cat. Simply won't happen.

Sorry you couldn't see the humor in the nature of the animals we both love.

I had Cheeta for 18 years, she was my little black cat, she was small like a 6 month old, whem I lost her we went and got 3 kittens from the shelter, one which was a tiny small black one. My son wanted her, I didnt want to attach to another black cat, I missed the other one so much.
Well guess what happened, Keeta became my baby girl, she was almost the exact same size, everything almost the same as the other one, except she had 2 white hairs on her chest. I lost her 4-08, after 16 years.
At first I expected her to be like the other, but one day I just realized she was her own girl. If I could have another cat, i wouldn't look past another black one. I loved both of them and miss both of them something horrible.
Make sure you are ready for another, you will know if it is right. good luck in picking out your new baby.

each cat will have its own personality. it will be just fine.

my newest kitten, who arrived on a freezing day on my doorstep, now grown into a neutered male cat, sleeps between my legs on the bed. rolling over takes effort. i have had cats sleep on my head, on my side, on my pillow, on my chest. he is funny and aggressive, and bites/tickles my toes to get me to wake up. he gnaws on me to show love.

the total opposite of my gentle girl, who is elderly and mellow.

emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I have my second gray stripped tuxedo cat. One male, one female. The only thing they really have in common is a love of food and fear of people.

I just watch how the cat/kitten reacts to me when picking a pet out. The gray cat I have now hissed at me in her cage as a kitten. Next time I came around she was purring and rubbing up against the cage. So you really may not know what your cats will end up looking like unless you are specific on the markings.

Go ahead and get ready for some fun filled times ahead.

Twinkle, when the time comes, you are going to go to a shelter and fall in love. You have no idea what shape or form your cat will take, they will jus speak to you and fall in love.

I set out to marry a tall, dark, rich man but somewhere along the way fell head over heels for a short, blonde poor man and never looked back! KWIM?

We have three cats. One adopted when DH went to volunteer in LA after katrina. He brought home a little beast with a half missing tail and patches of fur missing. She was so ugly and miserable - and I fell in love instantly. She's now queen of the house and never eats leftovers or food that has sat out. She cracks us up!

Do not worry twinkle, cat love will find you. It will be different but no less rewarding.

Twinkle-I suggest you volunteer at a shelter for a day. If an armful don't follow you home I'd be suprised. I have had at least 25 cats over my lifetime. They all were silly, annoying, great terrible, jokesters. I have loved each one and have special memories of all. Even my DH's horrible Pursian named Pugsley.
SAounds like you need a new friend or 2. So many are waiting.

I am sorry I didn't mean to seem insensitive. I was trying to say that she took up for me against a bully that even my parents didn't defend me. My sis did not like my cat or me very much.

Crystal got me up for school, brought mice to me and she had a litter of kittens in my bed, with me in it. Talk about trust.

You may expect it to be like your Little Girl but trust me, if you do, you will grow to love the new cat for who s/he is.

FWIW, I always picked the black cat if there was one. Crystal was grey, which was as close as I could get to black that time.

Sorry for your lose. I know what losing a pet is like for someone who truly loves them.

My experience with animals is that they are just like people and all develop their own personalities. Dogs, cats, horses, or whatever they will all become their own “person”.

If you feel like it later, re-read Greebo's responses and let yourself chuckle a little.
