Kroger Pet Food Recall

Before you dish out the food for your dog or cat, check the label. If you are serving up pet food brands sold by Kroger, the product may have been recalled. Brands on the pet food recall list include Pet Pride, Old Yeller, and Kroger Value.

Recalled pet food may contain aflatoxin
Kroger, the largest grocery store chain in the United States, has recalled dog, kitten, and cat food sold in stores in 19 states. The Kroger stores affected are in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

In addition, consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska should beware of these brands sold in Baker’s, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Gerbes, Hilander, Jay C, Owen’s, Pay Less, and Scott’s stores.

Aflatoxins are among the most potent toxic substances that occur naturally, according to International Crops Research Institute. The substances are a group of related mycotoxins produced by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus on corn and other crops. Corn is typically the first or second ingredient in many pet foods. Ingestion of aflatoxins by cats and dogs can cause bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, jaundice, and severe liver damage.
