my yorkie will be my financial ruin
my littlest yorkie is diggin me a hole i swear....i started, my fault but oh my lord!
i have 4 yorkies..im a breeder...one afternoon i was at my computer desk and all 4 dogs apparently were around the chair...as i scooter back the chair tumbled over them a blanket of the kids tossing me and scrambling dogs and unfornutually i landed on the smallest, Bella.
her femur was broke at 4 months old..ran to the vet..pin inserted, them removed $1400.00...still making monthly payments
then about a month ago..she came to me screaming holding her front paw..she is a total diva..i waited an hours and she was just as bad so i took her to the vet..once in her was fine..maybe a pinch nerve.
now, yesterday morning i let her out the crate to go potty and low n behold she is holding the repaired leg up tight as she can..no crying..i can pull it out no crying no jerking it back but she did spend some time laying in her crate voluntarily yesterday which is unlike her..so i called the vet and of course they need to see her...so my stomachs in knots about whats wrong and whats it going to cost me this time..i have enough money for a office visit but nothing major..not sure if they would add it to the bill i already have.
i hope its nothing i really do..maybe its the cold weather..maybe she sprained it jumping around in her crate..she is a high energy dog.

Yikes, you're discovering what most of us "in dogs" already know: being a dog breeder is EXPENSIVE and not something you can ever really make a lot of money doing. Heck, just being a PET owner is expensive! Things certainly can, and often DO, go wrong. Yorkies are so fragile, but it can go the other way, too. I have large dogs. One of my German Shepherds accidentally whacked his head into my mouth and broke one of my front teeth. Talk about EXPENSIVE! I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. Guessing that you probably need a larger "pet fund." You can also consider pet insurance. I have had VPI for years, but there are several to choose from these days. They would have covered that leg fracture at 80%. Best wishes for your little girl's total recovery.
Totally debt free since January 2011.

we actually had pet funds and were ok for anything that happened i have been breeding for a while
but the last part of 2010 sucked and has sucked us dry financially...my husband lost his job and hasnt found anything else..which was right after bella broke her leg..

The worst I ever felt was when I fostered a sulphur-crested cockatoo who would literally fly at me and attack me (can probably tell why he was in foster). I accidentally flattened him with one of those cheap full-length mirrors one day, trying to get away from him. (I twisted and lost my grip on the mirror, and it fell on him, knocking him out of the air and right to the ground and landing on him.) He had a concussion and it took him well over a week to recover, although happily, he was his old cussed self at the end.
It is always worse when you feel like you are responsible for your pet's suffering. That said, yorkies ARE divas, so it might be that she just figured out that she gets a lot of attention when she limps.
I hope it turns out to be minor. Last month, my vet bill balance was almost equal to my mortgage, so I sympathize.DH aka Mad Hen

I have a Dorkie....errrr..a Yorkie!
And yes, my Charlie has cost me more than I care to count!
Charlie likes to think he's a rottie. He loves to go up to bigger dogs and dance in front of them like he's saying "I'M A SHAKEY TOY!". He was shaken so bad one time when we were visiting my Moms that he had blood coming out of his heiney. He also had bad whiplash. The next time we went to my Mom's he ran right up to the same dog and started doing the same thing. Luckily I was right there that time and scooped him up.
We also have a Corgi with food issues. Yorkie every once in a while tries to get between the Corgi and his food-not to eat, but to do that little "I dare you" Dance. The Corgi usually gives him a few good shakes and tosses him aside. Last time Charlie got shook a little harder than normal and the way he was sitting I thought for sure he was 'going towards the light'. He snapped out of it in minutes and hid under the toilet andyapped at us for the rest of the day. The time before that the Corgi accidentally got a tooth on Charlie's eye. The eye swelled and matted shut over night. We ran to the ER Vet with that one. He had to have blood taken, a serum made of the blood and then I had ot put that serum in his eye twice a day. He also had antibiotics and other drops. It didn't work. He had to have eye surgery. It cost me about 4 trips to the vet and around $1,000. Towards the end I was thinking that I could get a good pair of needle nost pliers at Sears for $20 and just pop that eyeball out.
As for the leg.....Charlie has a bad kneecap and every once in a while it 'catches' and doesn't work right. He cocks that leg up under him as he runs. We call that The Tripod Trot.
But for a 12 year, nearly toothless 6 pound ball of attitude he sure has been fun!

Ah, I feel your pain....as a pug breeder, a few years back one of ours had a serious eye emergency that ended up costing about $3k....and had to be done at a specialist, 1.5+ hours away. So there's me, my super-hyper active 3 yo son, and my newborn daughter....and the pug, the VERY expensive pug. hey, no problem co-ordinating her 4 or 5 meds after surgery all on different schedules round the clock...I was up every 2-3 hours with the baby anyways. I am still not sure how we made it through those few weeks!
