    Default K-9 advantix

Has anyone had any trouble with this, if they've used it on their dog? I always used Frontline on my Lab, and we've 'inherited' my MIL's dog, took her for her usual shots and bug stuff, and heartworm, etc......and the vet gave me advantix for her. She got SOOOO sick. I mean she has had diarrhea, vomiting, listlessness, everything. For about 1-1/2 weeks. She is just now getting well. I had called them and I've given her Kaopectate and Pepto and changed her diet to homemade rice and boiled chicken. She's all better now. But WTH? Anybody else NEVER using this stuff again?

Please don't feel the need to comment if you're against flea and tick treatments or dog vaccines. I believe in them, and we HAVE to give her something for bugs, as we sometimes go to our cabin in the woods and there is no way to keep the bugs from hopping on her and coming in, without frontline or something. Thanks!

YES. Sounds like she had a major reaction to the medicine. My dog did too. He didn't get sick like that, but he'd just pace around the house completely zoned out, barely responding to us. And it got worse each time. So don't give it to her again!

Whether or not you choose to use tick medicine, the reality is that it IS a pesticide you're putting on their skin which can cause many adverse reactions. So yeah, if that brand didn't work, find a different one.

Hi, acid. Yes, she also paced and seemed restless and spacy.

I know that Frontline didn't do that to her (or my Lab, either), cause that's what MIL used to put on her. I'm switching her to that. MIL had one 'dose' left at her house, and I'm going to see if the Vet's office will switch out the advantix for some frontline.

I feel so bad that I put her through that. It's good to see her having an appetite and wanting to play again. And having normal stools.

I use K9 Advantix on my 2 dogs without any problems. Sounds like yours is sensitive to it though; I would switch her to Frontline.

By the way, I save on my flea medications by buying it in the dose for the largest size dog. I squeeze the tube into a small vial and dose it out with a 1ml syringe. 1 dose of K9 Advantix for a very large dog contains 4ml. 1 dose for my 10lb dog is 0.4ml. That means that I get 10 doses from each tube. Saves me a LOT of money!

advanitx uses permetrhin as it's active ingredients - it's a synthetic compound of the pyrethroid family. Closely related to pyrethins which are made from a compound from chrysanthemum flowers. Howerver pyrethroids, unlike pyrethrins, pyrethroids being sythetic are made to last longer and therefore tend to be quickly toxic. Pyrethroids essentially block sodium from being expelled by the nerve cells thus resulting in parasite death (i.e. fleas, ticks, mosquitos) The permethrin is suspended in an oily solution which is why, if there is a reaction, you should use Dawn(r) dish detergent to wash the solution off. (dawn get's grease out of the way)

Frontline, uses fipronil as it's active ingredient. Fipronil is a synthetic compound from the alyheterocyte (sp) family. These compounds block choline uptake by the nerve cells of the parasites, thus resulting in paralysis and death of the flea or tick.

The biggest marketing advantage that advantix uses over frontline is that it can kill flea, tick AND repels mosquitos. Check with your vet for frontline and try that after your pup is healed and well on the way . Again, fipronil is also suspended in an oily solution, so if the pup has a reaction, wash your pup with Dawn(r) dish detergent and call your vet.

Capstar is a good alternative to give if you have a flea issue, for now.

I googled Merial frontline, and they offer a coupon for a free dose. Here's the link http://frontline.us.merial.com/web_coupon.pdf

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Also wanted to add, if ticks are extremely bad, (for ticks only) Preventic collars are awesome! I can't say enough good stuff about them. We actually buy them for us humans and cut them in smaller pieces and buckle them onto our socks and long sleeves when going into the woods. They really do help keep the ticks off. We jsut make sure they aren"t in contact with our skin.

I have used frontline, K9 Advantex, and bio spot but nothing seemed to work last fall..I now give Boomer a pill each month..It seems to work but he is kinda out of it the first day. He gets big bumps on him when fleas bit him so nothing really works on him..I have been useing Dawn dish soap on him every 2 weeks and that seems to do better than the other stuff..and a lot cheaper..lol

Dawn dish soap! I wonder if that would work on her. It would be tough for me to talk DH into it though.....

Pert. Regular Pert shampoo is a great flea deterrent.
